http://www.sportsline.com/nba/story/5791034 This guy was supposedly a first round pick in most mock drafts I think the Rockets could use this talented athletic guard as a back up SG to Mobley. He reminds me of Morris Peterson. Here are some descriptions about him. NBA Comparison: Jalen Rose Strengths: Top notch athlete with imaginative offensive game.... Very prolific scorer with the ability to handle the ball and passes well.... Can run the point in spot duty.... Shoots the ball well from behind the arc... 7-foot wing span. Weaknesses: Needs to get much stronger. Doesn't have the strength to play in the NBA yet... Defensively can be overpowered, needs to develop on the defensive end. Shot selection and decision making must improve. A wizard with the basketball. Handles the ball with more confidence than many point guards. Very polished offensive skills. Scouts are drooling over this guy. Needs to improve his shooting percentage. Has a very good outside stroke. Very adept at taking defenders off the dribble. Without the benefit of a good floor leader, often has to create shots when they're not there. Upside potential is enormous. ..Yea he broke his foot and won't be an asset early in the season but we can wait for him to improve and become a very good back up SG. I think the Wizards are ignorant for sending a potential all-around player like Grizzard to the waiver wire. What do you guys think? Do you think hes worth a minimum salary contract with the Rockets at least?
With Rice, Morris, Nachbar, Thomas, Mobley and Maddox eating up mins at the 3 and 4, how do you find time for him?
Well when Mobley is out of the game, its usually Moochie at the 1 and Francis at the 2. I wouldnt want to cut out any of their minutes for a 2nd round pick. Maddox was more highley rated and drafted higher than Grizzard and sounds like hes a better defensive player than Grizzard.
So what your trying to say is, you want Maddox at back up SG when his original position is PG? Maddox right now is 3rd string PG, not a SG. Maddox is 6-4, while Grizz is 6-8 I will take my chances with Grizz just because of his height and wingspan. You wouldn't want to cut any minutes from mooch and francis for a 2nd round pick??? hello... Maddox is a 2nd round pick. Besides Francis needs to rest occassionally, especially if we expect playoffs this season.
For my money, I'd love to see Grizzard at the end of the bench. His handles alone would allow him to move between the 2 and 3, allowing for spot duties as a backup 1. Granted, he's an end of the bench player right now, and that's likely all he'll be for awhile. But, IMHO he will be a player in the League. I doubt it's with the Rox though.
Its well documented that Maddox is a swing guard in that he can play both positions, mainly, due to his size. He wont be Cuttino's direct backup. Moochie is the backup for both with Francis rotating. Grizzard, at this point, is no better or worse than Maddox. Its not a given that Maddox makes this team, and if he does, hell be riding the pine most of the year. Overall, there are no minutes for Grizzard. Again, Moochie backs up Steve and when Mobley is out, Steve plays 2 alot. Moochie only gets 20 mins or so a game, you are going to have to cut one of the three's minutes to make room for this guy. I dont see it.
Its still training camp, so he has not made the team yet. Maddox is a 2nd round pick. His contract is not guaranteed. So sir, he has not made this team. We have 18 some odd players on our roster right now. Someone has to go. Odds are, it wont be him but hes not guaranteed a roster spot.
He recieved a GUARANTEED Contract. http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/Rockets_Sign_Draft_Pick_Tito_M-53116-34.html
Read the article! It says a CONTRACT not a GUARANTEED CONTRACT. Theres a big difference sir! Every single draft pick gets a CONTACT but they arent all GUARANTEED. 1st round picks are, 2nd rounders arent. If that were the case, wed be stuck with the likes of Terrell Bell or Tyrone Washington on our roster every year. The Rockets can cut him and not have to pay him. Thats the difference.
Doesnt help. Says nothing in that article about being guaranteed! Again, 2nd round picks dont get guaranteed contracts. The reasoning is, 2nd round picks are long shots to make teams, why would a team put themselves in a position to have to pay someone they have a good chance of cutting? They would be strapping themselves. That was a big issue when the last CBA was negotiated. Teams were tired of being stuck with guaranteed rookie contracts for players that werent good enough to be on their team.
Grizzard is an athletic small forward who still needs time to develop. The Rockets already have such a player in Terence Morris and probably don't feel inclined to add another. Grizzard is an excess for this team and thus not needed.
I believe that Maddox received a 'partially guaranteed' contract or something to that effect.. essentially, while his entire contract may not be guaranteed, the way I have heard the reports is that he signed a contract that did in fact contain guaranteed money. Don't have a link though. I think most of this that I heard (and heard it several times in fact) came from 610. It was remarked upon most notably because of the very fact that ordinarily 2nd round draft picks don't get guaranteed contracts. So there may yet be some truth to the notion that Maddox is already assured a spot on the roster. Ciao
Sometimes they guarantee the signing bonus. I know those are always guaranteed. Maybe thats what they ment? And if they were going to bybass the norm and go ahead and guarantee it, i would find that hard to believe. What would make Rudy or Carol think that its automatic that he would make this team and thus, guarantee his contract?
2nd rounder are not guaranteed to get guaranteed contracts, but they can. Tmo got a 2 year guaranteed contract last year. Langhi the year before that. Tito signed a partially guaranteed contract meaning his is guaranteed a certain amount of money even if he doesn't play, but he will receive more if he does. I don't think they would have given him guaranteed money if they weren't going to spend a year to evaluate him. He will be on the squad for this year if only on the IR unless he pulls a Mad Max.
Because RT and Carol make the decision on who makes the team and they have pretty decide that they will give him a year to prove his worth much like Tmo and Langhi before him.
