Anyone else wondering if there are plans for a halftime or pregame gesture to honor him if he really is retiring on the home opener? Sounds to me like he must have contacted the Rockets about this if he's retiring that day. Evan
I feel that if they don't have a major celebration for the greatest player to ever wear a Rockets uni......It would be a disgrace to every Rockets fan, the organization, and all great #34s to ever rule in Houston.(I don't care if it overshadows Yao Mings first home game....)
I dont think it would be overhshadowing Yao's first game at all. Its almost symbolic to me. Passing of the torch from Hakeem to Yao. It would be a perfect time to retire Hakeem's jersey. I would hope that Hakeem dresses for the game, gets his introduction, his jersey raised to the rafters and then make his retirement effective after the game.
I will be at the game, so I hope they do something cool. I have been to a few really sweet Rocket's games in my life; Game 7 against the Knicks, opening night the next season, and the triple overtime game against Indiana two years ago being at the top of that list. By all accounts, the Rockets organization should make this as memeroable as those evenings.
That would be really cool if Dream said something at halftime and then wished Yao good luck with his career as a rocket.
I feel they should have a big celebration for Hakeem Olajuwon for all he have done for Houston. About the think about passing the torch to Yao Ming will really be hype. It will be a must see game for everyone. I can't wait.
You can bet your last dollar there will be a celebration and retiring of his number, but it may not be at this game. These things take time to plan it correctly. That being said, the question is does Olajuwon want a celebration? He is such a humble man that he may see it as superfluous and unnecessary.
well there better be some sort of celebration/acknowledgement of hakeem at the game. but there won't be a jersey retirement. don't those things typically take several years before a jersey number is retired. gretzky just now got his number retired for the la kings. i don't know much about hockey but i'm pretty sure it's been a while since he was a king.
I think in the NBA you have to go one full season before it can be retired. Drexlers jersey was retired in 99-00, and his last season was 97-98.
Dream 2002: "I would like to announce I will retire from the game and thank all the people who have supported me all this years. I leave the game knowing I did everything I could." Dream 2004: "I would like to announce, I am coming back. I do it not for the money but for the love of the game. Yes, I think I can make the Clippers contenders." Ah, finally. We love you, Dream. It's an annual thing to watch Spurs vs. Rockets '95 gamed 2, 5 and 6 at my house every June with some friends. Wish him the best.
NO NO NO NO NO! You'll watching the Rockets play in June for the next 15 years. Sorry! No time for your 95 tapes. Dream, what can I say?
I think it was mentioned here in a previous thread, but -- If Hakeem confirms his retirement (it's not official yet), then we will do something special for him. But ... it might not be at opening night. Two reasons: it does take time to get these events planned correctly, and we want to make sure that the focus can be on Hakeem that night. Incidentally, we've checked, and there are no rules about waiting periods to retire jerseys. Tim
Tim, You should call his scumbag agent and ask him. I think we should show the gratitude he deserves and retire his jersey as soon as he officially retires.
As a matter of fact, we are in communication with his agent on the issue. It's just not official yet. But as far as any potential ceremony, we're on the same page. You don't think we'd do this in a way that Hakeem would disagree with, do you? Tim
As much as Hakeem's attitude last summer and his eventual signing with the Raptors greatly PO'd me, I say that forgive and forget is the best thing for all sides in this instance. Building (actually rebuilding) a bridge between themselves and Hakeem goes a long, long way to demonstrate what a first class organization the Rockets are. Am I alone in thinking this is an impression Yao Ming will take with him through his entire career?
A celebration is definately necessary. His last game as a Rocket was great and Nov 2nd should be also. I hope I'm home when that happens.
