It took me a second to wipe off my glasses, but I thought I saw a guy impersonating Kelvin Cato last night. The #13 I saw actually looked halfway fluid on an 18-foot jumper and hustled a bit. I know it's only 1 preseason game, but his play was pleasantly surprising. Hope he keeps it up.

Well, he still has the rest of the preseason and the 82 games to prove us he's a good backup center.

Other than that, he's just a bum to me....

Sorry for the disrepect but none of you know what you talking about. A fair and balanced look at Cato could not have you guys making those kinds of comments. You could have made these two years ago or even last year when camp started but you cannot fairly make them now.

If you look at last season, Cato lead the team in fg%. Yes, I know HP is not all excited about that but I will take it. If you look at some of our best game last year, Cato was dominant. He definitely turned the corner last year in all aspects. The great thing is he did not stop there. For the first time in his career he had a productive off season. He is not fitter and from some reports may have improved his shooting. I believe all of this was not motivated, at least initially, by Yao. He also has a great attitude about Yao coming and has to be considered a key part of our rotation.

Finally, folks it is becoming very evident that the rockets environment is major plus. The way players are handled and managed is paying big dividends in terms of player development and improvement. The most recent examples are KT, Cato, Mobley, and Tmo.

Seriously, we should convince Cato that we're going to play a 82+ game preseason.

cato had a pretty productive season last year and based on what i've read about his new attitude i expect him to be a great backup.

Cato had a much better second half of the season. Maybe he really did work hard over the summer with the coaches and came to camp in better shape and more determined. I'm willing to roll with it for now. Having EG and TMo develop, Rice and MT back, and Yao Ming to skirmish in practice with may help him perform better too. I'm going to give the guy a chance... WTF? :D

Dude, you ppl need to get off the backs of Cato. The only thing negative about him is his huge contract, but compare that to contract of every other big man in the NBA and you'll see that big man are typically over paid or atleast fairly big contracts (Mcllvan, Nestrovich, Rose, MccColluh). I don't have a problem at all with the way cato played in the second half of last year, didn't he have like four straight games where he atleast grabed 10 boards? He can be a great player off the bench and once again, that salary really isn't that bad for a big man.

Man, you're talking logical around here. Might get flamed for that!

I was willing to give Bruce Lee..I mean Cato a chance last year. Even defended the dude. He did play better in the second half of the year but check where his stats came from. Second tier Centers. Teams that didn't have very good big men he could score (for him) and get his 10+ rebounds game. Games when you needed him to PLAY BIG (Shaq, Duncan, even Divac) don't remember him having good games. Maybe some of you stat guys can prove me wrong. But remember stats are for losers...

Cato is a backup center that I think does "manageably bad" against the big centers. He looks some what decent against second tier starters.

"manageably bad": the state of sucking, but not to the point where it causes a loss singlehandedly.

You can laugh all you want and make jokes but if the Rocks offered Cato right now there would be many takers at that contract.
