So did we really have great drafts under Kubiak or not?

Our crappines is on the coach or also the players?

At the beginning of the NFL season, I remember either I or someone else posting something about the Texans not having great drafts, and pretty much got destroyed by various posters stating the Texans draft very well. That media also find that the Texans have done well in the past drafts overall.

So do you still believe that? Do you believe this season was an aberration and that our recent draft picks aren't as mediocre as they looked? Or they just aren't as great as people thought they were?

I think Kube's first draft was well above average (the Mario/Demeco/Winston/Owens draft).

Since then the Texans' drafts have been fairly mediocre if not bad. How many players have they drafted that would start somewhere else? The only ones I can think of are Cush and maybe Duane Brown.

    Judging by this. . . . Three on D . . Three on O
This may dispel the MYTH that Kubiak is good at Offensive Drafts.
What great offensive players has he drafted outside of Owen Daniels?

"Foster was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent on May 1, 2009. He was later released on September 5, 2009, but then was signed to the Texans' practice squad on September 6 and signed to the active roster on November 17."

I grant you that one. They had to release him to get him back.
They did not know what they had . . they kind of lucked into it maybe :D

    In 06 we drafted

    Mario (Pro bowler) 1st Rd
    Demeco (Pro Bowler) 2nd Rd
    Winston (Good Starter) 3rd Rd
    Daniels (Pro Bowler) 4th Rd
David Anderson (Solid Receiver) 7th Rd

That is unquestionably a great draft, but the draft's since them have sucked and gotten progressively worse

Early returns on this one were a complete train wreck. Darryl Sharpton is the only halfway decent player i've seen, and he's hardly a difference maker.

He never has a chance to draft offensive players high because he has to keep on trying to plug the defense, but the ones he have drafted haven't really panned out.

Offensive players in the first three rounds drafted since 2007: Jacoby ('07 3rd round), Brown ('08 1st round), Slaton ('08 3rd round), Caldwell ('09 3rd round), Tate ('10 2nd round).

Brown's the only one of those so far that has proven serviceable. Jury's out on Tate, but you drafted a RB in the 2nd round when you had the guy who's been at the top of the league in rushing all year in camp. Slaton was a flash in the pan for a year, has shown nothing since and should be cut. Caldwell's listed as the starter on their depth chart, I'm not sure when that started... don't think it's been long. Seems like every time I've heard his name mentioned it's about how he can't beat out the linemen we already had. Jacoby is not on the field as a receiver on a regular basis unless Dre is out due to injury, has not shown anything this year in the punt return game after 1 previous good year, and for some reason was demoted from returning kicks.

Guess you have to include Schaub in there somewhere since the Texans gave up two 2nd rounders for him. He was good last year after finally managing to stay healthy the entire season, but has been pretty average this year. Almost feels like having a running game throws off his rhythm.

I guess I don't see a reason to give Kubiak credit drafting on either side of the ball either. Not to mention the questionable drafting of a gazillion TEs in the later rounds.

    you would be wrong.

we've had one above average draft (2006) with Kubiak.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Casserly still the GM during that 06 draft and neither Kubiak nor Smith had been hired yet?

    Kuibiak had been hired.

    Casserly was still around.

    No Smith yet.

So if the Texans had kept Casserly and Capers, would they be better or worse than 5-10 right now? :)

With the 10th pick of the 2007 NFL draft the Houston Texans select Amobi Okoye.

And is it me or does it seem like even our good picks seem to be inconsistent?

Mario? Pro-Bowl quality, but has lots of bad games
Daniels? Developed into pro bowl quality, and then got injured
Cushing? One awesome year, one down year
Slaton? Hopefully Foster doesn't go down this path
Demeco? Consistent, but not game-changer, and now injured
Young CBs? Last year looks nice, this year pure crap

Other than AJ, I just don't see consistency year in and year out. Now it's one thing if you're so stacked with talent that you can just keep replace production with new players. But when the top Texans players go south, everything goes south.

I wouldn't call it a down year, when he wasnt playing out of position, he was the best player on the defense

The story at the time was that Casserly was there but Kubiak was making all the decisions. Casserly didn't draft well during the Capers era and Kubiak hasn't had a good draft since, so I just kind of chalk 2006 draft up to the Texans franchise getting lucky for once.
