you're right about the stopgap idea. but i don't think i could earn the respect of students. plus i'm not a very patient person and I really don't like teenagers, they're pretty annoying... sometimes i wonder "was i like that?" than i realize, nahhhh!!! as for the high school lookallike, once i shaved off my sideburns and goatee and went to work and everyone made fun of me b/c i looked like i was 12 years old, literally...
Severe Rockets Fan, Man, don't tell them just about the money in nursing... tell them what a pain in the ass it can be, too! I worked at a hospital as a pharmacy tech for about 4 or 5 years. People talk about stress in the IT field, but nothing compares to what some of those nurses have to do and endure. There's no way I can do some of that stuff - I don't care what the heck you pay me.
i don't think there is that much stress in the IT field... people say proctologists have the best stories, but i beg to differ... i have entertained many people at many a party with my stories of working in IT support back as a college intern... of course you have to be a nerd like me and understand computers, servers, networking, etc. to like my stories!
Hey gr8-1 Are you in Houston or Austin now? I am still technically going to UT (will graduate in December) but I am in Houston fulfilling the last part my degree requirement (an internship). I'm interning with Pierpont right now, and they are actually looking for another intern. Unfortunately, it's not a paid position, but for me, I just wanted to get the degree out of the way, so I figured I could suck it up for a semester assuming I would be living at home. It's not advertising, it's PR, but we do a lot of different stuff (creative marketing and the like), and it's not like you need a PR degree to qualify. It's really a good group of people to work with, and you get a lot of good experience that might complement your ad degree nicely for the long-term. Let me know if you are interested.
prempeh, thanks for the heads up, but I'm still in Austin. So much is going on right now. I'm just now finishing up my degree as well (December), and will evaluate everything when it's over. It looks like I may have to move out of Austin to get a decent job.
Not to burst anyone's bubble, but NO GIRL in the IT industry even remotely looks like Jennifer Aniston... hell if they looked like "Fat Monica" i'd be happy!
What r ya talkin about drapg??? I've worked with some of the most beautiful women in IT, like Even during school, the girls in our program were quite attractive for the most part. For example, my manager right now --rockit
damn. that just means i've just picked the WAY WRONG companies. now i don't feel so bad. thanks rockit! as for school, well lets just say the UT CS dept. in the late 1990s made me stay away from Taylor Hall as much as possible. Oh, the horror! (sorry, not trying to be mean, especially if there are females from UTCS reading this.)
Yeah, though a lot of advertising work is done before landing the client in many cases. In many instances, there is a need to put a lot of thought and effort into spec ads or into presentations necessary to land the client account. If that makes any sense.
well i guess i shouldn't say i don't suffer any stress. i have had jobs with awful bosses and coworkers that didn't understand anything about computers. they expected miracles to be performed instantly from the magical box that sits on their desk. instead, i take the stress and just realize how funny the nontechnical people can be when they misuse their computers. i'm sure people do the same with me when i don't understand something about law or medicine.
Oh cmon! A PhD in Dunk is a lot more stressful than a nurse . Seriously, you are right, nursing is very under-staffed these days and many times a nurse that should be taking care of 2-3 patients often has 6-10! Thats why radiography is a good alternative because of its lower stress level. But nursing days go really fast because you're always busy...before you know it, 8 hours have gone by and you've made $320...not bad for a days work. And don't tell me about pharmacy I was a tech for 1 year and didn't like it. I didn't do the hospital thing, but retail pharmacy. Talk about hectic! That was more stressful than radiography or nursing for sure! You really have to be efficient with your time or you'll have 10 people breathing down your neck for their meds...and nobody's happy to be at the pharmacy, its always "Whats taking so long!" "Why won't my insurance pay for this?!" "check the computer again!" "I need these quick!" etc, etc. I feel your pain.

Drewdog: I work for QuantumMail.com. We do mail prospecting, and our customers are mostly real estate companies. The company is somewhat small, but it has been growing and expanding and generally doing very well. About a dozen new employees (including myself) were hired in various departments over the past ten weeks or so, and now we have roughly 40 employees. So far my job is pretty cool...I develop web applications, putting my HTML, JavaScript, and basic XML knowledge to use, and I also create database applications using Visual FoxPro (which I had to learn on the job...fortunately my knowledge of SQL, Oracle, and general database concepts made the learning curve easier and faster). And of course I have to help people in other depts. such as customer service whenever they have computer issues...and yeah, sometimes the "issues" are so simple and easily solved that it's amusing. One thing I like is that, unlike many other developers, I and the others in our IT dept. don't have to put in 60-80 hours a week....I can just do a standard 40 hour work week (plus OT if necessary), and I can come in whenever I want (e.g. 9am, 11am, etc.), although I still have to average 8 hours a week. Our other depts. don't get that kind of flexibility. My advice to job seekers: - NEVER give up or let frustration get you down, no matter how bleak things seem. Keep your head up and keep trying...eventually things will work out...even if it takes a while. - Exploit every single avenue you can think of (job sites, networking, telling your buds and parents to keep a eye out for openings...since many job openings are not even publically advertised, etc.) Those of you who are UT students or alumni from the College of Natural Sciences, definitely check out their career center website (or even pay a visit to them). Lots of good job-related links and info. I'm sure this is the case for other colleges too. I don't like Monster.com because nearly every other job seeker who has Internet access probably uses that site too, thus I had almost no luck with it...but I used it anyway, along with the local paper and many other sources. I've had more luck with America's Job Bank (www.ajb.com) although I can't stand their ugly and unintuitive GUI (graphical user-interface), and Access UT. - The job search can be stressful and time-consuming, so I suggest doing the occasional fun activity to get your mind off of it temporarily.
