http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2002-10-10/0311331643.shtml Nothing is new. But this is from the China official media-Xinhua News Agency. Erik Zhang told the reporter from Xinhua that the deal is done. 1. 18 milion for 4 year 2. It's a "guaranteed" contract. If Ming is injured or has some accidents, he will be still paid. 3. Rockets will ensure Ming's duty to NT.
Great. I fully trust the source of the news and am glad that the deal is finally done. It also said that the a provision of Yao Ming's national team duties is inserted in the contract. It appears that this is a win-win-win-win (Rockets/Yao Ming/Sharks/CBA) deal.
I have posted it before, I'll post it again. I want a pair of warmups in the style that Yao's wearing. Don't know if I'll see'em at Oshman's, however...
Although the print of the Contract has been accepted, Yao Ming cant sign any NBA Contract till the CBA relaeses him via FIBA. Then FIBA must inform The Houston Rockets that he can sign and is free to join them.
The Guarantee . . isn't that standard??? and How can the Rockets ENSURE Ming's duty to the NT? If ming say know. . will Larry and Rudy stuff him in a bag and taKE him to china. Rocket River
fwang, All rookie scale contracts for first rounders are guaranteed for 3 years with a 4th yr option, which is also guaranteed, if exercised. It is a required clause in the NBA's Uniform Player Contract, part of the reason why rookie contracts are rarely argued, and why there's yet to be a camp hold-out over money since the new player/owner agreement. Maybe they mentioned this merely to contrast it with the 2nd Rounder contracts that Wang and Bateer received. RR, What bothers me is that we must release him to the NT for FIBA events. I thought we had verbal and written agreements to have him all season and playoffs. What happened to those preliminary agreements?
HP, Maybe they want the ability to call him for those events but may not actually do so? I wonder if we can pay them for Yao not to have to go. It is the American way after all...
I meant to say that we have to release him by FIBA rules, anyhow. What is new or different about that written assurance other than China likes written assurance on their letterhead, I guess. What really needed to be in writing is their promise not to exercise these FIBA rights during the playoffs. At one point, we had that assurance, yet we no longer hear about this anymore. All we hear is that we promise to release him for NT events...which is already mandated for any FIBA-sanctioned events.
Perhaps they won't do it during our playoff run this year... I think a good reason for them not to excercise the "option" or right would be if Yao Ming were doing really well over here and garnering huge positive press for himself and China and Chinese players as well. It might help their cause more to let him stay and play here... I mean, don't they have any other players over there in a country of a billion people that can excel on their team at that level of competition? It's like recalling Barry Bonds to play in the little league world series...
point of order....the first three years of any NBA 1st round contract is guaranteed, there is no surprise here. the 4th year is always up for negotiation in some ways.... am I missing something here...there was not much to negotiate?
It appears that Yao Mingis salary is "guaranteed" whether he is injured or not. In other words, he will be paid $18 MM for the next four years even if he is injured half way. (I have read two reports confirming this point). Now this is my speculation: suppose that Yao Ming attends an international event on behalf of China and he is injured, is he still be paid by Rockets afterwards while going through rehab? Question for HP and others: is this "guarantee" typical for a NBA vet or rookie?? - This is my understanding of the sticking point between Eric Zhang and the Rockets's owner. Apparently, they resovlved this issue.
