I don't mean to complain already, but why did most of our starters play regular season type minutes last night? Griffin and KT played 33 and 32 respectively, while Francis played a whopping 37 minutes and Mobley played 35 minutes on an ankle that we all know has been giving him problems throughout training camp. Am I the only one that has a problem with our main guys playing this many minutes in a preseason game?

I don't agree with the logic, but perhaps Rudy figures that since all the players, including the starters, are learning a new offensive system (or at least something different from what they have been doing) that they would benefit from extended minutes as much as the younger, less proven players.

I was/am a little concerned. It's not just about their minutes, but I also want to see what some of the newer players can do.

Raven, I'll buy your explanation though, so I'm not as concerned as I was previously.

If more playing time is what it takes to gel as a team and get the system ingrained in the players, then I'm all for more playing time.

I think part of it may have also been matching up with the Grizzlies. They put their starters back in midway through the second quater, a few minutes before our starters went back in. Maybe Rudy really wanted to make sure we win this one to build confidence and will use the rest of the preseason to evaluate talent.

But I would have liked to have seen Boki get more involved. Maybe next game.

Three of our front line starters were not available( Ming, Rice, and Taylor) So yeah I can see Griff and Thomas playing heavy minutes.
Mobley and Francis is where there is little cause for concern. I hear Francis and Mobley are gamers and love to compete no matter what the game scenario but these guys are vets now and we know what they can do.Theres not much sense in giving them starter minutes. But on the other hand this team will have 3 new starters and a few new guys on the bench so when all the guys are in attendance and healthy later during the preseason games, Rudy may play Francis and Mobley even more to give them as much time as possible to gel with the new guys before the season opener.

I say we start something similar to one of Rudy's tank line ups of late last season:

    Moochie
    Torres
    Nachbar
    Griffin
    Cato

I'll agree with Raven Lunatic that with all the injuries and everything else going on last season combined with a new offense, the "regulars" probably need some time running together as well. And you still have Rice and MoT on the outside looking in at the moment.

I recall Rudy doing this for the past several years. Starters getting a lot of minutes early in preseason, then tapering off in favor of the new guys later, when the roster cuts have to be made.

Rockets Pimp i am with you 100% ya i like to see the starters play but in a preseason game not that much! put the young guys in!! like Boki!!!(i made a whole thread about this) Boki played 6 minutes and if im correct preseason games are to get players better and ready for the season and how are you supposed to get ready if you only play 6 minutes and in those 6minutes you dont get the ball!

Regardless of any strategy motive...which there may be some...I think attempting to limit wear and tear and avoid injuries to key people should be the overriding goal.

Hopefully Rudy just really wanted to start the season off with a win.

Yeah we probably know alot more about coaching than Rudy does. Lets second guess everything he does without thinking about possible reasons that he did the things he did.

The point of preseason games is not to win, but to gel. Rudy was most likely trying to let some of the more inexperienced players play with Steve and Cat so they are used to it. Because when Rice and Taylor get injured seven games into the season again the youngins are going to need to know where Cat likes the ball and how Stevie likes his coffee.

And I haven't seen a post from you with less than 3 exclamation points...calm down a bit, it's still the preseason. :) :D

My theory is we saw a respectable group of starters to get them used to the motion stuff, and then all the people who may or may not make the team. Rudy doesn't need to find out if Nachbar is good enough to make the team, and he doesn't have to worry about him being in the starting lineup either, considering that we have a healthy KT and Rice.

    GO TO %*$$&^^^%&$*#$&&#^$*%&* YOU $#^@#*$*ING #&$^%**^ARD!!!!!!

I just had someone tell me that Jim Edmonds didn't know how to swing properly while I am watching the game and now I have CUTTINO RULES!! telling me that Rudy T doesn't know how to coach and I don't know how to post. Well, the first thing you should learn about posting is how to spell. Maybe that is why my posts don't make any sense to you whorebang because I spell out my words like an adult.
