Each day when the Rockets finish practice, when the last scrimmage is over, the last drills are done, the last weary man has made his way down the stairs to the locker room, usually one weary body still is out there on the floor trying to do just a little more.

"Never waste a chance to play basketball," said Courtney Lee. "The next game isn't guaranteed."

It's a lesson Lee learned the hard way after his roommate and best friend Danny Rumph died of a heart attack five years ago when they were in college at Western Kentucky.

"School had been over for about a week and we were both back at our homes, but I had talked to him on the phone that afternoon," Lee said. "Laughing, joking, making plans. You know, all the things young guys do."

Lee thinks about Rumph not just at the Christmas season, but every day of the year. His right arm bears a tattoo of the friend who just may have changed his life.

i think Yao should give up his jersey number......it's not being used, let Lee wear it (i guess the change would have to be made next season?) and this way, if yao returs, he can come back with a new number to match his new outlook.

You are just as harsh as Battier and his "We knew this was coming and we have to move on comment" after word came out he had a stress fracture again. Battier is prob. right, but coming from him, its a bit surprising.

    This was his exact comment

"We were prepared to move on with or without him," forward Shane Battier said. "I know that sounds harsh to say, but we knew with his (previous) injury and surgery, there was a chance he may not play again this year.

Yao should take on the number 3 if he comes back, in honor of his most favorite and least favorite teammate ever...

Yao should take change from 11 to 1 because he only has one leg left...

What? The quote you linked to is hardly harsh, since there was always a chance the surgery wouldnt work. Nothing harsh or surprising about saying they were prepared for either possibility.

And I wasn't implying yao was done, although i do think it's time to part ways. However, i think it's fairly likely he'll have to settle into a new supporting role to prolong his career, rather than being a team's franchise player. He has a teammate who wants #11 for sentimental reasons and it's not being used now and probably won't be used for at least a calendar year. Why not let him have it and use a new number for a new phase of your career?

Lee's jump shot reminds me of Monta Ellis's. I also like AB with Lee, because an earlier post mention the combo of Lowry's D and Martin's O go together. Just like AB and Lee... good o and good D. But Lee's offense is coming along and those jumpers coming off the screen are going down easily.
