I'm going to see it after work. I love westerns. Unforgiven has got to be one of the best movies ever made. I only wish Clint Eastwood was younger so he'd star in more of them.
wow, the tomatometer at 97% with 117 reviews. that is off the charts good. but fan reaction seems more mixed. i think the trailers are very misleading though. i don't think this movie is going to be what people are expecting.
What makes this movie so good are the performances by the actors. I won't go into any details, but this story is told in a very straightforward conventional way. The Coen brothers don't try and reinvent the Western, and it is rather tame compared to many of their other films, but I really liked it.
I generally can't stand the work of the Coen Brothers, but I love Westerns, so I will check it out. Not expecting a whole lot honestly
This is probably the best western I have ever seen, even better than Unforgiven. It seems to be very authentic in terms of dialogue and setting. I definitely need to watch this movie again, subtitled. I could only make out 85% of what was said. If that girl is representative of 14 year olds of that time, man, our society has really gone down hill.
I must make knowst such a gleeful of an event, as I have not known but one other great movie such as what I have just witness. But it's glory, though wonderous, wanes but a few measures short of Unforgiven. I shan't not have each further compared. I loved the dialog. It reminds of the letters in Ken's Burn's Civil War documentaries. As for the 14 year old. Wow! Great acting!
Good grief- you are such a huge hole of negativity. 9 times out of 10 a post by Rhino17 means some derogatory statement.
We saw it last night and really enjoyed it. What makes it a good Coen Bros movie is that they follow the Western so closely, which almost always has someone to root for. My only problem with Coen movies is sometimes they are so dark that there's not even a character you can sympathize with (like that weird movie about the physics professor. great flick but just so bleak.) As for the 14-yr-old, without spoiling anything, I don't think she was typical -- LOL! Apparently, they based this very, very closely on the original novel, so I'm interested to see that book now. They did the same thing when they adapted No Country for Old Men. Maybe some of their best work is when they don't let themselves monkey with the plot. Also of note in this movie: Matt Damon and Barry Pepper, in supporting roles, are fantastic. I wish Barry Pepper got more work. He stole the show in 25th Hour also.
She might get nominated in a supporting role. She didn't get upstaged by all the big guns (pun intended) around her. Not at all.
Saw True Grit and Black Swan yesterday......best day of movies. True Grit was absolutely amazing and the dialogue was as always very well done. The Coen brothers are always amazing me with how they keep making excellent movies. That being said I think this is the 4th best Coen bro's movie. 1. Miller's Crossing 2. O Brother, Where Art Thou? 3. The Big Lebowski 4. True Grit 5. Fargo The only thing missing in True Grit is a quick cameo but Steve Buscemi.
I heard Matt Damon based some of his role of the bumbling LaBoeuf on Texas' Fortunate Son, George W. Bush himself. he , as well as Barry Pepper as Lucky Ned Pepper, were outstanding in their minor roles. Brolin for that matter, too. I loved the way they capture the era , somewhere in the late 1870's, 1880's. another Coen masterpiece with the help of their go-to crew of Cinematographer Deakins, music by Carter Burwell, and editing by "Roderick Jaynes"
For me the humor took away from the story, but the photography alone was worth the price of admission.
