At the 1:50 mark of the 2nd Q, Brad Miller turns the ball over. But wait, watch it again. Battier missed his cut.

Battier was going to be so open to a lane to the basket, and Miller passed it to where Battier should (or could) have been.

Seeing a pass like that makes me think Miller (like a QB) is watching the defense and passing to the opening. Battier? I'm so disappointed, and he look disappointed in himself as well.

Does Miller watch the defense vs his teammates,,,,like a QB?

Sorry, I didn't post this in the game thread, I'm watching 45 minutes behind and hate spoilers. Wish I had video editing ability and this would be a video.

Any video people want to toss me a bone on this 5 seconds of bball, and post it? Just to show how Miller thinks, when he passes?

Isn't the offense read and react? they should all be doing it, but Miller has the ball and he's more obvious about it.

I don't mean Miller should be QB of our team. I'm just using a football analogy to describe the way he looks at the court. I'm just saying that pass is one that really shows his mindset.

but he is the QB when he's out there....most of the time he's getting the ball and finding the cutter or shooter...my point is that's pretty much the foundation of the offense. Read and react. Rather than doing the same thing and trying to force it through the D you adapt depending on what they do. All of them can be quarterbacks at any time, but Miller gets more touches in that situation and literally looks like one because he looks for along time and kind of holds the ball like a QB..also makes a lot of one handed passes.

I like the quarterback analogy -- its very apt, actually.

He gets the ball in the highpost, and surveys the court like a quarterback. If he doesn't see open teammates, he'll take it in himself in his own lumbering way (which he's surprisingly effective at).

yah he makes those passes from the top of the key very well. if you were in a pickup game with brad youd be scoring everytime you made a backdoor cut because theres always the slightest seperation when the defender isnt watching it constantly.

I don't care about the Adelman read and react.

This pass is not like any I've seen this year from Miller trying to read and react.

The team is out of position, yet Miller see's the defense retreat, but Battier doesn't.

This is instinct. Requiring you to watch the defenders and not your teammates. This can't be teached.

imo, this is amazing....especially since Battier did not see it.

anyhoot, who cares...it's gets a really cool play

I would not say Battier did not see it. I need to watch the game again to ensure if my memory serves right, that is, in that particular play, Battier took a step back when his defender retreat. By doing so, he created room for an open 3, and also, that's an easier pass path for Miller.

Im a fan of Miller and his passing, but i think you're taking it over the top here.....read and react is watching the defenders AND your teammates. If you don't watch your teammates, then it doesn't matter what the D does because you won't know where your teammates are. You can watch both for the most part. Real QBs have to watch both. Instinct is too strong of a word to use here. He learned the offense just like anyone else, but is better at it than most, especially than the bigs. It helps to be 7 feet tall and able to look over the defense.

Shane was visibly upset at himself for not seeing this development and told Miller it was his fault.

it was a beautiful pass something that is just more instinctual than anything else.

makes me want to go back and watch film of the kings back in the day.

hopefully as the team keeps playing more with miller they are able to see this more and more.

there was a similar play later on where miller made the pass to Lee cutting, Lee had the open lane I thought he would go in for a layup/dunk but chose to shoot a small floater instead which he didnt make. But the play was made. Could be attributed to Shane not playing that much with Miller on the floor. Either way watching Miller operate on the high post and thread the needle to lee/martin/chase coming of those tight curls is just awesome.

on that note, i think shane is cerebral but not instinctual player (whereas Brad is probably both but less cerebral than shane, although both are unathletic).

thats probably why you dont see shane gets lots of buckets on crisp give n go/backdoor plays-- his natural feel for the game is very low. thats also why he's constantly camped out for the corner 3-- he knows its the smart shot to take.

I think you're right. I remember when Artest was here and Shane was asked to compare himself to Ron as a defender, Shane said he was more cerebral while Artest's approach was more instinct.

I saw a similar play during the Mavs game in Dallas. Miller can literally throw a teammate open (borrowing another football analogy) by leading them with a pass to where they can elude the defense and be positioned to score going to the basket. It's a thing of beauty.

Yeah, basically Battier is pre-programmed. That's why he was so stuck in the yao-tmac offense and is now getting out of that mindset.
