Now for all the those who work out there, imagine if you had to make this decision about two different jobs on offer.

Straight out of graduating from small college you took your first job working in PHOENIX on a very small salary and a two year contract ($20000 a yr).

Now your initial two year contract is about to expire and you have greatly improved in your job performance and to reward you, your current employer offers you a new 2 year contract 2yr contract worth $40,000 a year.
Additionally your boss talks to you and says "I would love to offer you more but this all the budget will allow at the moment, however if you stick around I will reward you with a much larger salary in another 2 years time".

Also, Over the two years in the job you have come to build up some great frienships with your colleagues and bosses and really begin to enjoy life in Phoenix, and with these close colleagues have made some large improvements to the company and greatly enhanced it's potential.

I week later you recieve a call from a rival up and coming company in CHICAGO, and they are offering a 4 year contract and a salary starting at $50,000 and increasing at least 5% each year.

Interestingly this chicagos companys current performance is better than your company in Phoenix however it's long term potential may or may not be as strong.

Complicating the issue is the fact you and your family are from MINNEAPOLIS and so is your girlfriend who has just recently given birth to your son, and she would like to remain close to her family.

SO everyone make your decision, what would you do????

Stay in Phoenix. Of course you guys all know my stance on this, but still it would be what I'd do in that situation as well.

Are you still bagging groceries down at the H.E.B.? Have you ever heard of personal progress?

Corporate loyalty is a sham. Why anyone expects a player to behave differently than their employers is beyond me. Shall I sing praises to Brent Price, A. Carr, R. Rhodes, M. Dickerson, et. al. again?

Achebe: Have you ever heard of loyalty and long term? I have integrity, and would not betray a company who had made sacrifices for me. Also, I am concerned about my whole life, not just one year, and I could get more money staying in Phoenix because I will get payed MUCH more after those two years. That is personal progress IMO.

Achebe's right. The days of corporate loyalty (in I.T. anyways) is dead and long-gone. It's a meat market. If you are content being full-time with no stock options etc, I feel for ya. Then again, more jobs for no-loyalty-havin' scum like me. [IMG]

Because of this, I have nothing against Cuttino if he leaves EXCEPT :

If it is true that his agent asked the Rockets not to draft someone that plays his position in order for him to negotiate with the Rockets first. At that point, I'll hate his guts. That's the one thing you're leavin' out Smeg of Situational and Hypothetical Musings... in your scenario, nobody's holding a job open for you while you go looking for other jobs, and no one is promising to not hire someone to replace you until you're sure you want to leave.

    Arvo, Smeg.

DOD- I did indeed read that article in many places, and assuming that the articles were correct, I'd say you were right on. Maybe the rest of you can see why I hate Cuttino so much over this as well.

I know this isn't the intent of SmegMeister's post, but I was loyal for quite some time and was a full-time employee for quite sometime. Full-time employment has its advantages, but I'll counter your statement by saying this : I'm a contractor and I feel that I've grown a lot more and gained a lot more experience contracting than I would have if I had stayed at one company. I've also tripled my salary in 3 years without having to go into a managerial position and still doing relatively the same thing I was doing 5 years ago, just in different tech environments. Try doing that staying with the same company. My idea of personal growth is new environments, new technology, new challenges, new cultures, etc., not staying at the same place doing relatively the same thing with the same people forever. We all have our beliefs though, so obviously your beliefs aren't wrong; to each his own.

This is exactly why I won't blame Cuttino if he leaves. I would be a hypocrite if I did. But BOY will I dislike him!! [IMG]

Have any of you thought about the way cut-tino felt when the Rockets pursued Shandon so heavily? What kind of message did that give Mobley? That he wasn't good enough to start?

Exactly Dr. I wrote this story earlier in a 'Duncan - stupid or not' thread, but I'll relay it again.

I used to work for KUC, Kennecott Utah Copper Mine, here in SLC. A company offered me a 33% raise, and KUC was my first job out of college (so the raise was substantial). I attempted to negotiate the same raise at KUC, and was told that it was bad timing. The company appealed to my loyalty to stay on at the lesser rate. Needless to say, I left.

Two months later, KUC laid off 500 people, including people that had appealed to my loyalty and been critical about my lack of loyalty. Several Bothan warriors died to get these plans, oops.

The Cat: trust me, if some megacrazybs trade for R. Lewis does go down, you won't care the slightest as to how many b*stard Canucks that Cuttino is having.

To me it just meant we needed another good player and particularly another shooting guard as we were short in that area- Cuttino was our only option after Dickerson was gone and depth never hurts. And with Cuttino's spark, I personally feel he is better suited to be a 6th man anyway.

Actually, I will still care, as no matter who we get, I'll always wonder to myself "What if we had Mobley too." But, I know the franchise will move on, and I and all of us will as well and we'll find new and better things to talk about. But I'm certainly not ever going to think of Cuttino as a decent person or one that I could respect if he did this. DOD, Achebe- I really do respect your opinion, and I know what you're trying to say. But this is all our opinion, and no matter what people say I won't change my stance on Mobley. I think it would be very selfish on his part to leave, and I hope you guys can understand the reasons why I think that way.

    DoD,

Good point about the don't get someone to fill my position/draft analysis.

Actually when i said "boss told me he would pay me more later" there is a also a negative in that, imagine if Cat stays in Houston under the premis that he will get the max after this contract and then he blows his knee out and comes back with no speed and ends up being a chump who doesn't have the physical ability to match it anymore, or if he just stinks it up. ARE the Rokcets then going to Sign him to the MAX?????

What i was trying to say is these wink-wink nudge-nudge unwritten pay you more later deals can go horribly wrong???

what happens if for whatever reason Shandon comes out this year and stinks and goes backwards and they still going to give him the max????

I think what i am saying is nothing is guarenteed, especially when it comes to consistent performance and salary size, for example Isaac Austin, one good year, a big salary and now he STINKS.

In both situations I would want what benefits me.In smegs case I would go to chicago for the money, but in cuttino's he has to stay here, that would make me happy so it is the best for me :p ,a bit selfish isnt it.
