Smokey... You don't have the best athletes, not even close, not even over Rice. You just have more. But you try sooooooooooooooo hard to produce quarterbacks and bball players and tennis players. sooo sad. and it hurts..soooooooooo bad when you fail. poor poor UT fans.
Smokey, According to the NCAA at ncaa.org, Rice is #1 http://www.ncaa.org/releases/makepage.cgi/awards/2002092601aw.htm
From what I've read you are probably going to need at least a 30 to even think about getting in. And thats with a 4.0 and other activities. I'm guessing around a 32 would be a sure bet to get in?
What's your problem, hp? Rice cannot come close to UT and A&M in major sports. UT and A&M cannot come close to Rice in academics. So what's the issue? Are you actually arguing that Rice is a sport school? I admit that it's pretty darn good for its size, graduation rate, and academic reputation, but let's not make it out to be somethin' it ain't.
HP, not to put a damper on your alma mater enthusiasm, but I've been hearing rumblings about Rice athletics becoming very restrictive of students' academic decisions. I've heard some athletes are being bullied away from majoring in strong departments such as History because the athletic staff don't think they can handle it and instead being pushed into Kinesiology whether they're or not they're interested in Kinesiology because the department as a whole makes player eligibility a top concern. I'm not saying it's better or worse at other schools. I just think it's a damn shame that adults are pressured into decisions about their academic career, which for many is a big reason why they choose to come to the school. Again, this is hearsay on my part. If any Rice folk in the know care to elaborate on this point whether in agreement or disagreement, be my guest. Ricky Pierce went to Rice??? Holy ****!
Something tells me that you UT and A&M fans never understood the meaning of the whole waving car keys at your players. Oh, and I have another one, UT has never embarrassed the Aggie band like Rice did.
good.. vandy is number 1 for something.. i thought we had the highest graduation rate.. i had heard it recently... which is kinda surprising considering they actualy take real classes.. some are in my calc etc.. i wonder why those lists differ so much.. if they are within two weeks of each other..?
wow, this thread has boiled down to band smack. so you can claim better qbs and hitters... how about: best runningback? Earl Campbell best pitcher? Roger Clemens what does this mean? that stats can be manipulated to give any university a best something... doesn't mean that one school's program is superior b/c of these stats.
About football, just wait 10 years and see about Vincent Young, etc... About basketball, our program is developing other than the big setback with Ebi, so wait... Baseball, you have a point... Tennis, who cares???
The article doesn't say so, but that's just for college football. In men's hoops, for example, Vanderbilt graduated a robust 33% during the relevant time frame. (Mostly from transfers out, which count against you.) Presumably, heyp's list is correct as well. --Kimble, Vanderbilt '93, waitlisted at Rice
kimble.. hmm interesting.. i'd transfer out too if i was here for basketball and saw all this work lol... i'm not so sure that transfer should necessarily count against you... you graduted in 93... you mean you can actually survive all this evil work and graduate.. that's good news..
Since we are getting into SI rankings of things... Everyone check out the rankings of athletics programs in last week's issue. Granted the Longhorns were number one, but check out 45 and 46. One's Rice and one's A&M. Oh yeah... the Faggies got 46.
For academics, why don't we look at UT's business, engineering, and (law programs). For undergrad, who's ranked higher in these majors? Uhh...UT How about graduate? Uhh...UT So our school is ranked lower than Rice overall. Our liberal arts program and ridiculous enrollment pulls us down plus all those other dumb factors that US news uses. Now look at academic reputation, one of the few factors that actually matters. Last I checked UT was 4.1 and Rice was 4.3...
LOL!! Actually, I was referring to the time the Corps was performing at halftime at Rice doing their elaborate maneuvers. A few Rice students with whistles strategically placed themselves around the stadium. They blew whistles off time to the Drum Majors. I was there. It was incredible. One guy turned too soon and the next guy followed, and so on and so on. It quickly cascaded through the band to the point that they could not recover and.... ....<b>for the first time in Aggie history</b>, the Corps had to walk off the field in shame. They were crying. Sweeet!! It was actually so sad that the Rice President had to put out an official apology, because A&M alumn were so furious that we would embarrass their band like that. LOL!! See the similarities between how much pride the Corps band has and how little pride the MOB has. Sorta like how much pride your fans have versus Rice, and how much pain you go through versus Rice fans living just to see you cry over a game, just once. sooo sad.
Stick to the Aggies, that way it will be true. I'll take LaSalle Thompson over Ricky Pierce. I'll take Keith Moreland's career over what Berkman has accomplished to this point-- guy doesn't even have three full years in the majors yet. And there's not a knowledgeable football fan alive who'd consider Tommy Kramer to be in the same league as Bobby Layne. Rice has also never produced athletes of the renown of Earl Campbell, Roger Clemens, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Tommy Nobis-- not to mention coaches like Harvey Penick and Tom Landry.
Read this piece from the Rice Football Webletter on the MOB's infamous 1973 performance in College Station. It's hilarious. I can just see the angry Agroids fuming, going home and punching the wall, and then bottling their fury by writing letters to the editor -- in crayon. http://www.flash.net/~pth/mobday.htm
