I picked up my guitar the other day for the first time in probably a couple years. I was trying to think of some fun songs to play that sound ok on an acoustic guitar and you can sing to. I really had imagination block. The best one I could think of was Tyler by the Toadies. It's a simple D, A, F#, C, G the whole way through. Hotel Yorba by White Stripes: G,C,D,G I don't have an ear to actually hear the chords being played, I need to look them up. If anyone wants to add to the list . . .

Canon in D and all of its billions of variants is: D, A, Bm, F#m, G, D, G, A <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JdxkVQy7QLM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JdxkVQy7QLM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Here is how you play Runnin' With The Devil by Van Halen: green button 2x yellow button 1x red button 3x green button 2x blue button 4x red button 1x blue button 5x repeat. oarnge button 10x whammy bar to rock star status.
Man I remember back in the day when I started to pick up the guitar in high school, the fad back then for beginners was Stairway to Heaven. Is it still these days?
First song I learned on guitar was Love Song from Tesla...the whole first part of that song is great for playing on an acoustic
Stairway is too hard for a true beginner. I started with "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple just strumming the simple notes first and then moving to playing it with power chords. I think the other newbie song I learned was "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. lol
With Johnny Cash it isn't about the chords as it is the strum pattern. You have to keep up the chucka chucka train car rythm which isn't always that easy. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/v7gV5C5mB7A?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/v7gV5C5mB7A?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Anyway for the OP most popular music along with Blues, Country, Bluegrass, and Folk is only about 3 to 5 chords. I guess it depends on what style of music you want to play. Here are three very simple early rock songs ones. Twist and Shout, simple 1-4-5-5-4-1 pattern (If you need some chords try G-C-D-D-C-G) Louie Louie, almost exactly the same as Twist and Shout Wild Thing, almost exactly the same as Twist and Shout just add a G-F-G-F for the bridge.
Yes I am a musical nerd. Last night just for fun I wrote a song about the Metrodome collapse. Also for the OP. For the love of God DON'T PLAY WONDERWALL!
