What happens now that it's confirmed that Yao can't be our centerpiece. What do you think Morey does and what would you do? -Do we keep our core and keep trying to go for the Star player via trade? -Do we need to get rid of some of our main guys but still try to stay competitive? -Should we blow it all up and start rebuilding?
I think Morey waits to see the CBA situation and how well we do when the season is done before he decides what direction to take the team in the long term. I think regarding this season, he's looking to get into the postseason.
First question I have is whether we officially end it by trading him. It might seem cold and will surely alienate some fans, but it would be the most pragmatic move right? Are there teams out there that would be willing to give us good players in return for a 17 million dollar expiring contract?
Martin was brought here to play with Yao, obviously can play without him but I think you have consider trading him with his defensive limitations. I say keep the core together and try to add young exciting two way players and see where it takes you. By the way...to soon.
I think our best bet would to be something like Yao to the Clippers for Baron Davis and their #1 pick, the Sixers for Brand and their #1 pick, or, heaven forbid, the Wizards for Arenas and their #1 pick. Obviously you could try to get them to throw in more, but I think the albatross contract + draft pick on a losing team would be the easiest way to move Yao for a potential superstar. I don't see any other promising players out there that franchises are desperate to move. And if those franchises are desperate enough to move their albatross contracts, can we start a bidding war? Because I'd even take on Arenas contract if it brought us back two lottery picks from that sorry franchise.
We got to do Scola a favor and send him to a contender for young guys and picks. He deserves a chance to play for something. He's super competitive and would be wasting his time here.
I think the main piece that'll be gone is Rick Adelman, I've always liked him but we need more of a defensive coach. And I believe we eventualy (try) to trade for a star while keeping our core.
It is sad to see Lowry giving his 120% every night for such a losing team. I'd trade Lowry and Scola to good teams. For Rockets, let's wait for Yao.
Reclaiming the defensive identity just became a much more difficult challenge. No more Mutombo, and now no more Yao.
let Yao expire, trade Scola(30) and Martin(27) there's no point in having large salaries on a rebuilding team.. We need send Scola and Martin to a contender.. IMO
Agreed. We aren't going now where without Yao now. Let Scola play with a team that can contend and get the Twill train going ASAP.
Core? We have a core? I think a Core are players you build around and we don't have that. Keep acquiring young players until you find some that work. That's pretty much it.
I think Rick Adelman is done with this team after this season. He came here to coach a title contender, not young players fighting for the 8th seed. Rockets will need to hire a new coach, my guess is they'll hire a young coach, maybe one that is currently an assistant somewhere, that can work with what will probably be a really young team next season. It's unlikely any major star is going to come here with the position our team is in, so Scola should be traded for young players or draft picks. He's already in his 30s and by the time we are good again, he will already be past his prime. Trade Battier and Jarred Jeffries for young players or picks. Trade Yao's expiring contract if you can get something worthwhile for it, otherwise just let him retire as a Rocket. Trade either Martin or Brooks. You aren't going to win many games with that type of defensive backcourt. Hope you get a high draft pick and get lucky and land a franchise type player to build around.
This changes much, I think by "core" we look at Hill, Patterson, AB, Lowry, Lee and now T-Will. Not foundation pieces but young players who can grow into something of substance or already there but still young. I do agree, Scola, Martin and Battier need to go. If they want to give it a shot this season by picking up another center that could fill the void then okay but be prepared to unload those guys in the offseason.
I say we keep Jordan Hill if we are rebuilding. He should be able to develop into an excellent two-way player. We keep Martin as an uber scorer. See what Terrence Williams can do. And........?
