If we want to turn Terrence Williams into an all-star we need to keep Shane Battier. He will help groom Terrence and keep him in line. Shane is the true professional and it rubs off on others. Terrence is only 23 with supreme potential. He will surprise the league and Shane will be one of the reasons why he flips the switch (Along with Rick Adelman and the other vets). Rockets, we are ready for lift off!
shane is a great leader, and because of that i don't think he should be traded. i hope he retires a rocket, joins the coaching staff and eventually becomes adelman's successor. as for shane being a mentor, it depends on the protege. ariza didn't work out too well. i think williams true potential is on offense. as a point forward with GREAT athleticism and play making ability i don't see a better coach out there for him than adelman.
I think what's interesting is that now Shane's gonna have a protege who looks up to him as a defender, so he already has that initial respect from Williams. So this is a protege who actually wants to be mentored by Battier.
Battier needs to stay but not as a player. Keep him till next summer and retire him by offering him a job on the coaching staff.
Trade Martin before Battier? Martin is arguably the #5 or #6 best SG in the league. Where does Battier fall in the top SFs of the league?
I can't see him being traded unless it's a one sided deal or part of a deal for an all-star...he'll definitely help TW work out the kinks in his game, especially the professionalism aspect. Although Battier isn't a great offensive player, i think his knowledge of offensive play is underrated and he can still help Williams on offense as well. He's had to study a lot of opposing players' moves over the years and even if he can't do them himself he can pass it on to Williams.
Williams is a grown man. This whole idea of using grown men to mentor other grown men seems totally ridiculous.
shane is more of an assistant coach than a mentor. his leadership is getting the team to execute the game plan and motivate them to play as hard as he does. this would make him a great head coach one day. the jury is out on him as a development coach.
forgive me, i don't mean this in an insulting way at all, but this comment is pretty immature. anyone who has a profession understands that they can learn from someone who has been doing it longer than them. especially one who has been doing it better. regardless of age. if "grown men" decided they didnt have to learn anything from anyone by the time they were 22 (like twill) no one would ever master anything.
