Early morning that way you can enjoy the whole day.

I hate driving long distances at night always feel like something is going to pop out right in front of me..Also if for some reason I have car troubles or a flat I do not want be stranded at 3 am....

This is pretty much what I was going to say, except I might exit at 1am. I found the only way for me to make it from Houston to Boulder in one shot is to leave early in the morning, so that I've already made some distance when the light shows....and then it's like the whole day is starting and i don't feel tired at all.

I've also used the strategy of leaving at 9pm to make it just past Dallas...then napping at one of Texas's great rest stops and continuing on at first sun light.

I guess my strategy is like John Wayne..."Saddle up...We're burning daylight" in the sense I can't drive anymore once darkness comes so I like to get an early start,,,tracing back to darkness.

if I leave in the morning at say 8am, instead, once the night comes, i simply can't drive anymore in the dark....and I haven't even made it out of texas, yet. lol

and as DoD says, on the way back, whenever/whatever. That's actually when I might do the easier, albeit, longer drive...which is another thread possibly "Longer/Easier or Shorter/Faster". The easier drive in this regard is I-80 through Kansas turn right at 35 to Dallas. simple, big and easy to go fast.

Sems odd to me to "listen" to a sitcom you've already seen rather than listen to the radio, your iPod playlist or an audiobook.

I've done it in the past. It's generally more engaging than music; e.g. jokes and evoked emotions. You also get the benefit of not hearing single person narration (audiobooks). My only major quip is that episodes with a lot of physical comedy are real deadspace for a drive.

I've thought about getting one, for as often as I'm on the road.
    Christmas is coming up.

Probably night although if the weather is bad, I would rather be driving in the morning or daytime.

Just drove from Houston to Vegas, 24 hours straight. Left at about 7 pm and arrived at 11pm west coast time. We took a lot longer cause of flats tires and what not.

But I prefer driving at night, more open road and better gas mileage with no a/c needed.

Depends on where you are driving, the only long drive I ever occasionally have to make is from Houston to Denver. I prefer driving in the day, there really isnt any traffic at any time during that ride once you pass DFW

    Safety first, drive during daytime.

Drove to Chicago a couple of times, the trick was to stop every 150 miles, rest for at least 15 mins.

Coffee and beef jerkey, the best combo for long driving. Keeps you awake and full and hard to digest.

And yes, Buckees, a good rest area :).

I prefer driving during the day. Driving is my job. It sucks trying to find addresses at night. Besides, there's more traffic to blend into during the day, and therefore, a smaller chance of being hassled by the man.

I use mine whenever I drive in Europe: works like a charm. However, do know that they're illegal in almost all Western European countries, but the chances of getting caught and risking having it confiscated is pretty low, from personal experience and what others told me.

Just be careful about the 60km/h in German towns or construction zones because it's really hard to speed in those without getting caught.

Also use, online resources to find out where the fixed cameras, portable cameras, likely mobile-speed traps, and 'average speed' boxes are including those already saved in your high-end (has to be $$$, otherwise worthless in EU) radar detector. This also eliminates false positives which turns many off radar detectors, really though, once you get the hang of it you can predict when it will mistake a safe signal as a radar.
