I think ten years ago, without a doubt I would have answered:

"Probably a Center. A physical specimen at 6'11 or more, a couple dominant go-to moves on offense, can hold their own on boards and on D. At least some combination of these traits, just like Shaq, Hakeem, Duncan and some others have had."

But the pace of the game has changed. Even if Howard develops a couple consistent offensive moves, can he be dominant? Today I'd have to say for the majority of games, PGs the like of Rondo, Paul, Westbrook really influence the entire outcome of the game more so than any other type of player.

"A PG that constantly dictates the pace of the game, requires offenses to react (sorry Kidd), amazing court vision, and great defensive presence."

I really want to claim that the next truly dominant player is a bigger, more offensively assertive Chris Paul (or Rondo with a shot + freethrows). But historically, dominance is rare by the PG. Instead, it's an SG that often dominates.

"An all-rounded SG with one-in-a-generation gifted offensive ability who can get to the line at will. Jordan, Kobe, and in one year, Wade."

And yet, it seems like that those potential Jordans not named Kobe are not going to come to fruition. Today's athleticism seems to demand even more size and quickness; there's some visions of what might be dominant in Lebron and Durant.

What kind of player do you guys think will next achieve true "dominance" and become legendary in how they impact the NBA?

Definitely someone biologically created by nerds on the internet.

I really hate posts like these. When he comes along, he comes. And he will have to prove himself to earn the title. And as he does so, we will marvel. But to constantly dismiss what's in front of you because you're holding out for clear cut signs of the GOAT, or the most optimally built athlete, just sucks the fun out of the moment.

Individual ability trumps stereotypes and generalizations. Leave the hypotheticals for space age exploration and things you can impact.

    Lebron James/thread.

Size of Karl Malone, athleticism rivaling Dwight Howard, shooting skills better than Kobe, Magic-like vision and passing skills. Seriously, just look at the record between Cavs last year and Cavs this year.

You're greatly overrating the impact that a PG (or any perimeter player really) has on the game defensively. At the same time, you're underestimating the impact that Howard has on that end of the floor.

Basketball is still a game where you have the best chance to score if you get close to the basket. Dominant big men can negate that by protecting the rim, blocking/altering shots and controlling the glass.

A Center who is as tall as Yao Ming, as fast as John Wall, Jumps as high as Prime VC, Can dunk like Griffin, has Handles like Penny Hardaway, Can beat Reggie Miller in a Shooting Contest, Better courtvision than Nash, Draws Fouls like Kevin Martin, Plays D like Prime Ron Artest, Blocks more shots than Hakeem, Also with a more deadly go to move than Dream Shake and Skyhook, Has more length than Durant, Steals more than Chris Paul, Has a FG% reminicent of Kareem, Rebounds like a combination of Wilt and Rodman, more clutch than Jordan, and weighs more than Shaq.

    I can only dream

Shooting skills better than Kobe, you must be crazy!!!!! I'm not a Kobe or Lebron supporter, but in no way shape or form does Lebron have better shooting skills than Kobe.

You're right. Kobe is better from midrange and at the free throw line. They're about even (maybe a slight edge for Lebron in recent years) from 3point range.

Look at the elite point guards lately. Look at the championship winners. PG's aren't getting it done. Aside from that I'd agree. But you don't see Paul, Nash (in his prime), Williams, or any other top tier PG leading their team to the promise land. The Lakers got it done with one of the worst starting PGs in the league.

Blake Griffin - I said he would be an all time great before he suited up and is looking exactly like it.

The Lakers did face a team in the Finals whose best player was their PG.
