Bake sales aren't the problem. Soda and junk food vending machines in schools are the problem.

Why even let them go home at all? Just make them wards of the state so Michelle can raise them.

During the summer, a number of the schools in Oregon open for lunch each day. Sometimes, it's the only meal the kids get. Some kids in my daughter's school have been foreclosed on or their rental house was foreclosed on and they are living in cars. Literally homeless. Sleeping in school would be a step up.

Regardless, I think you can make a good argument for providing meals for kids as it goes to learning capacity and such and it seems cruel to sentence the child because of the parents' situation or whatever.

I just wish I wouldn't see so many parents in line at the grocery store with one part of their purchase consisting of milk and basic foods paid with food stamps and WIC and another part consisting of beer and cigs and junk food they pay for with cash.

I'd be in favor of a drastic restructuring of those programs, but I sense tobacco companies and businesses like Wal-Mart would lobby hard against any reform because now we effectively subsidize a lot of their sales by paying for people's milk.

I wish they would do away with fundraisers all together. I pay 5 grand to the schools each year and they still need to get my kids to hock overpriced wrapping paper and cookie dough to us and our neighbors. Crazy.

Guys, bigtexxx is a troll. Don't feed him: ignore him. He went away before, he'll do so again.

Getting back to the proposed legislation: those who are saying it isn't a problem haven't spent much time in education recently. The food served at schools is appalling. And yes, fundraising sales ARE a big part of the problem. There was a PTA fundraising table selling cookies year-round at the school where I teach, and it eventually got to where the students were skipping their lunches so they could spend their lunch money on cookies. Bear in mind: this was a fundraiser sponsered by parents, run by parents. Parents baked the cookies, parents sold the cookies. And they did NOTHING about it. They were more than happy to mortgage their children's health and education (yes, diet affects learning), $.50 at a time, if it meant they made a little more money for the PTA.

The district (not even campus, but DISTRICT) admin was finally forced to step in when the teachers complained about the kids who were sugar-spiking and crashing during the day. So while you could argue that this problem needs to be addressed at the state level rather than the federal level, you cannot argue that the problem does not exist. It exists. I've seen it. And if the states won't do anything about it (Why would they? After all, it IS bringing in money...), then I'm all for federal standards.

bigtexxx, I got your back brother! Let me insult these dimwits lefties like Mcmark, Major and their circle jerk buddies, I can't believe the koolaid that you guys been drinking has not worn off. Your man Mr Obamadinejad is going down faster than a 10 dollar hooker. The American people are revolting left and right and here we are in this forum we still have lefties defending him and blaming Bush. You lefties are too pathetic to have a dialogue with that is why I believe when dealing with lefties, insults and ridicules work the best!

    HAVE A NICE DAY!

I'm still waiting for the first time that strategy works for you, because it hasn't happened yet.

Yep -- when they have to resort to insults and calling any non-liberal a troll, well, you know who's won the discussion.

Then what does that say about esteban's post, which included such insults as "dimwits lefties," "circle jerk buddies," and "pathetic"?

That's ok because he's on your side, right?

Actually, I think refman is on the right track with his observation regarding lack of exercise. Whereas, like refman, I agree with the overall goal of reducing chiildhood obesity, this law is too intrusive. Since Michelle is so intent on imposing her views on childhood obesity, why not go the extra mile to be effective? She could add an electronic game "codicil" to the bill that would hardwire / program electronic games to operate for only two hours in any 24-hour period. That would make the kiddies -- and adults -- less sedentary.

I find your war against cookies to be righteous and bold.
