San Antonio or Dallas? Might Bateer not help Yao's transition to the NBA? For the nonguaranteed contract of OT and a #2? Get him!

    Team's eyes on Chinese center
The Spurs continued to talk with Detroit about a trade for Chinese center Mengke Bateer.

The Pistons, not wanting to take on any additional contracts, rebuffed the Spurs' offer of point guard Erick Barkley. Detroit wants a second-round pick for Bateer and likely will trade him to Dallas if it can't make a deal with the Spurs.

The Spurs like Bateer, who was traded from Denver on Monday, but are hesitant about adding to their payroll because of the impending luxury tax. The Spurs, one team source said, are weighing whether to give up the second-round pick for Bateer, keep one of the four centers they have brought to camp or wait and see if they can work a deal for another big man.

Bateer (6-foot-11, 290 pounds) averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in 27 games for Denver last season.

The Spurs, who already have two young point guards in Tony Parker and Speedy Claxton, would like to remove Barkley from their salary cap ? they even offered to pay his salary for the Pistons ? to make room for another center.

If they cut Barkley and he clears his waivers, his salary would still count on their cap.

Ouch: In one of the Spurs' most-hated drills, Coach Gregg Popovich selects a player at random to shoot two free throws. If the player doesn't make both of them, the entire team has to run suicide sprints.

The drill usually continues until three different players have made both of their free throws.

The Spurs had to run five sets of sprints Tuesday until Steve Kerr and Tim Duncan mercifully knocked down their free throws.

"When you run about six suicides," Duncan said, "that's all the pressure you
    need."

xiki, for future reference. Please post non-rockets, basketball related topics in the NBA Dish forum. Thanks.

He was talking about to trade for Bateer who can help Yao's transition to the NBA. Bateer may be available because both the Pistons and the Spurs have problem to make room for Bateer in their teams as the article says. Agree with the idea or not, no one can deny it's a Rockets, basketball related topic.

And what was that 'dumbass' oneliner for?

Yeah, that is a bit unnecessary.

For the time being, it would be a bad idea to have more than one Chinese player. China would be holding too many cards if we had Yao Ming and Bateer. In a couple years, when chinese players are a bit more established, I don't think it will be as big a deal.

Don't expect many Chinese Mavericks in the near future (teehee).

We have a quota? Be careful, you might start some kind of Chinese player affirmative action or something... ;)

Oops, my bad...I didn't see that the first line of the post were his own comments and not part of the story. I saw the story was about Bateer, and I thought xiki was trying to be cute by naming a thread "Chinese center" and posting a story about Bateer. I apologize for the comment
