Looking at the Cap Info from DAVO [Thanks]
    Somethings jump out at me.
BULLARD Makes 4 mil next year?
Is 'Los worth his 3 mil Next Year?
    6.3 MILL FOR WILLIAMS!!!!!
    6.0 For Cato???

But it leaves us with 36 mil for the Cap.
[What will the Cap be next year?]

Malony and McLean's Contracts should not
count next year because of a deal.

    Rocket River
Just trying to soak up the fact that
Cato and Will will take up a 3rd of our payroll

    RR,

I'm not exactly sure about Bull - I've seen conflicting reports about his salary and some people have it as low as $1.2 Mil for next year. Also - your a misreading it - I don't have Bullard earning in $4Mil - it is only $2.025Mil for the 2000/2001 season, and then the following season, he is listed as $4Mil because as a bird eligible free agent, that is what he will count towards the cap until renounced or signed to a new contract.

I don't know exactly what the cap will be next year, but estimates have it pegged at $35.5Mil.

Do you know for a fact that Maloney and Mclean do not count this year? I can understand McLean but I'm not sure about Maloney. I know the Rockets negotiated a deal to pay him out sooner, but I don't know how much or how soon. If you can provide with some info it would be much appreciated.

The reports were that Malony was bought out.
    Paid over 2 years.
    Last year and this Year.

    What about Augmen, Shaw, etc?

this may be a really dumb question, so please don't slam me. if hakeem retires next year, do we not get his salary that we will drop to count towards our salary cap room. if so would we not be eligible to sign a big time free agent?

    Clutch9495,

Every since Pippen graced to organization, the rockets have been way over the soft cap which allows teams to go over to sign their own free agents. The rockets will drop about 8 million under if Hakeem retires and Bullard is renounced.

    Clutch9495,

It's not as simple as that. Currently we are way over the cap, and justing shedding Hakeem's Salary of $16mil does not mean you automatically get $16mil to spend.

As Joe Joe alludes to with the Pippen example, the cap is a "Soft Cap" whereby you can exceed it in order to sign your own free agents (altough its not really a good example because we were under the cap when we signed Pippen). In order to sign Pippen, we delayed signing Barkley, who as our own Bird eligible free agent, could be re-signed to any contract even if we were over the cap. After we acquired Pippen and were at or over the cap, we could still re-sign Barkley for as much as we wanted (actually $9mil i think) which put us further over the cap. Now you can see why even with Barkley retired we are still over the cap. Also, the "ramping up" that most contracts tend to do (especially Hakeem's) can put you even further over the cap.

So, with a total payroll this year of $56mil, even dumping Hakeems $16mil contract will not get us under the cap. Hope this makes it clearer.

I didn't mean to use Pippen as an example, but as a memorable moment when the rockets went over the cap.

Barkley actually sign a 1mil 1 year deal before the pippen signed knowing that his bird rights would allow the rockets to over pay him next year, the 9 mil year.

The salary cap for next season should be around $41M. The MAX for top free agent will be 30% of the cap, and that's $12.3M
If you guys lose Mobley this season, you will be about $13M under the cap even if Shandon Anderson exercise his player-option after this season. Webber or Finley are awaiting for you.

And I don't think Maloney's contract was bought out, becouse if that is so,his salary wouldn't be listed as high as $2,025,000 for last season.

The ROckets are really trying hard to keep Cuttino, but if we do we would only have about 7 mil under the cap. Wel that is not enough. That is why I think the Rockets will be actively pursuing a trade involving most likley Walt, but possibly Cato, with either BUllard or Los, and the trade exception, for a rookie(ie-FIzer) and a player with only one yer left on his contract. That way, if Mobley stays, Rudy gets what he wants and still can go after Webber/FInley or Carter if he opts out.
