Okay, I have recently bought "A Rush of Blood to the Head" by Coldplay and "Sea Change" by Beck.

Amazon keeps recommending these albums to me:

"White Blood Cells" - White Stripes
"Veni Vidi Vici (?) " - The Hives
whatever the name of the Vines CD
    "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" - Wilco

Okay, I also have "Is This It" by the Strokes and from reading it seems like most of these bands (except for Wilco) are sorta like the Strokes. I have a feeling that there aren't very similar to Coldplay.

At any rate, I want to know if anyone here has those CDs and what you think about them. I have already got an idea about Wilco, but the others, I have no clue.

I would love to hear what you think are similar artists to these bands.

    Thanks

that's very interesting that they would recommend those artists considering they are DEFINATELY not as mellow as Coldplay or the new Beck..

The bands mentioned are sort of New York/Garage/70's Punk (except for Wilco, which I am not a big fan of) they're just sort of raw, back to basics, fast, in your face, rock n' roll...

http://www.cdnow.com is bound to have sound clips, go check them out...

as far as bands similar to the new Beck and Coldplay, I would suggest STARSAILOR, Elliot Smith and The Beta Band....

"White Blood Cells" - White Stripes
Yay. One of the best albums from last year! The closest band that I can think of is the Pixies. The singer's voice reminds me a lot of Frank Black's.

"Veni Vidi Vici (?) " - The Hives
Yay. They kind of remind me of Rancid when they're rocking out. It's not spectacular or anything, just a fun album that rocks!

whatever the name of the Vines CD
Nay. I've just heard one song and it reminded me a little too much of the Stone Temple Pilots for my liking. No thanks.

    "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" - Wilco
Double Yay! Similar artist? That's tough...maybe a cross between Radiohead and Neil Young...that's the best I can come up with. They don't really sound like anybody.

I would rank them in this order: Wilco, White Stripes, Hives, Vines.

Yea, I have that album as well as Coldplay's first 2 albums, Oasis's first 2 albums, and the best of Blur and of course, all the Radiohead CDs.

However, I think that Travis is the band that resembles Coldplay the closest. I have "The Man Who" and "The Invisible Band". "The Man Who" is the better of the 2, but they are both good. If you are a Coldplay fan, then I definitely recommend Travis.

I'm not a big Rancid fan, but I know they don't sound much like the Hives. I don't know how to describe the Hives, I just know I love their sound. CDNOW.com is always the best way to preview an album. My favorite songs are "hate to say i told you so," "main offender," and "die, all right." Basically, if you want stripped down rock music with memorable riffs, this is the album for you.

I have the Vines cd, they don't sound like Nirvana as some people have tried to say, nor do any of the songs remind of STP(which one DC kid).

The new Beck CD got rave reviews but I thought it was pretty boring and uninspiring......

The Hives remind me of 60's garage rock, if you are familiar with the Nuggets box-set. Both are essential...I believe you can get a the Nuggets collection on a single cd. They are really funny and seem more alive than most groups out there.
The White Stripes are kind of taking a lot of the cool, spare blusey elements of the John Spencer Blues Explosion and leaving out the ivy league-slumming feel that goes along with JSBX. In addition to Frank Black, I think Jack White is mining a lot of the same territory as PJ Harvey in stripping away the boring-ass white blooze purist stuff (see: Austin City Limits) and recasting the blues back to their spiritual homes of the gutter and the groin.
I have listened to a few songs from the Vines and they don't thrill me much, but they are young. They sound like they listened to "Bleach" a lot.
Wilco have been around longer than these groups. They make music in a similar vein to Mercury Rev right now and they have bits of the db's, REM, Radiohead, Big Star and the album "Pet Sounds" floating in there. I think they got Jim O'Rourke (now in Sonic Youth, has produced and worked with Stereolab, Tortoise and all kinds of left-of-center groups) to play on Yankee Foxtrot Hotel, so they are clearly going in a more avant-garde direction right now. Wilco emerged out of more alt-country roots and worked with Billy Bragg in producing a couple of great interpretations of Woody Guthrie lyrics. They are one of the best groups out there, in my opinion.

Oh, one more thing: check out Supergrass and Super Furry Animals, please...thank me later.

Sorry, Dimsie's husband Elvis Costello wrote the above stuff. Stupid man.

"Get Free" reminds me a lot of "Sex Type Thing." But, that's the only song I heard.

"Supply and Demand" is my favorite Hives song. As for Rancid, they really aren't anything like the Hives, but still the best I could come up with. I think some of Rancid's really hard rock stuff is a little similiar, not the reggae-tinged stuff. There's not really any popular current bands that sound like them.

It only took me two listens to start getting into, and now I absolutely love it. I think it's one of those albums you kind of have to be in the right "mood" to get anything from it.

my rankings for what its worth,

    1. hives - loud, screaming rock
    2. strokes - cool mellow singing with a bunch of guitars
    3. vines - kinda jumbled up. except for a few songs, kind of like a normal rock band with normal rock songs.

I bought Yankee Foxtrot Hotel and was disappointed. Although it's been compared to a Radiohead album, the vocals are weak and lack any memorable melodies. I'm not sure if that's because of the writing or because the singer (Jeff Tweedy) has a lame voice. I'll give the band some credit for trying something different, but I think that the experimental vibe of the record actually exposed their limitations.

I've never been a big fan of country-rock. It tends to sound like bad Eagle songs (BTW, I don't really like the Eagles that much either) sung by Midwestern guys with croaky voices. I've been told that the lyrics are supposed to be the focus, but I don't find those particularly inspiring either.

    Sorry for the digression.

I think Amazon might just be telling you what other people bought who also bought some of the CDs you did, but I could be wrong.

I'm a little turned off by all the hype surrounding all the "The" bands. I mean, the Vines on the cover of Rolling Stone with the title "Rock is Back!" ? Yeah right. I hate that crap. I just don't think any of these bands are that great. I do enjoy the Hives album, but I don't think it's anything special. I picked up the Vines album because it was dirt cheap -- again nothing special, although "Get Free" and "Outtathaway" are good rockers. I listened to online samples for the White Stripes, but they didn't make me cream my pants or anything, so I don't have their newest one. I refuse to buy the Strokes album due to all the hype unless I can get it used for cheap. "Last Night" is a good tune though.

I think to some extent these are all the same band. I'd put the Hives clearly up top though -- they have the fun-factor (even though the singer seems to think he's Mick Jagger). "Die, All Right!"

For larger than life, Ramones-meets-Beach Boys ROCK-n-ROLL, go for "Uppers and Downers" by The Yo-Yo's (UK). They are the band that should've been on the cover of Rolling Stone, not the Vines.
