Good move, Clips. Wang could be serviceable backup player at 2-3 positions. Good press, and Mavs will likely take him anyway at a higher tag. No downside here.

Is there any implications for Yao Ming's signing here?

if Mav matches the offer, is that automatically for 3 yr 6M or just for 1 yr and wang be an unrestricted free agent?

I believe a la the Marc Jackson incident last year that it would be the same contract for the same length, meaning that it would be three years. I don't see Cuban letting him go for nothing unless the CBA really pressures him or something.

What I think is dumb is that Wang didnt want to play at the Asian games because he wanted to go through a NBA training camp for the first time. Well, that started today and he still is not even on a team.

The Mavs would have to sign him to the same contract, same thing happened with Marc Jackson last year, and Ricky Davis this year. And I don't know if you can call Wang dumb, he didn't join those games, and as a back-up who barely got off the bench he is about to sign a contract that will pay him 2 million dollars a year and he WILL get the contract because he has to, and he will either be a Mav or a Clipper by the end of the 15 days because one of those teams are required to take it so he is going to be on one of those teams.

Well this is good. In a way. I knew that if Yao's signing depends at all on what the Mavs do or don't do with Wang ZhiZhi, then you can bet Cuban'd milk it to the last minute. Now we know for sure when Wang is gonna be officially signed to an NBA contract.

(Wish I knew when Yao's gonna sign, but I'm optimistic.)

I think you guys are forgetting that according to the Collective Barganing Agreement is all three parties (Mavs, Clipps, and Wang) agree to recind the offer then a sign & trade can still be done. Wang's offer was for only $2 million a year which is nothing to Cuban. If he told the Clipps he is going to match the offer unless they recinded the offer then depending on how bad they want Wang a sign & trade can still be done.

The only thing the Clipps did by signing him to an offer sheet is guarentee that the Clipps are the only team Cuban can deal with in regards to Wang (which is still smart on the Clipps part).

Are you sure about that? Last year when the Rockets were trying to sign Jackson I heard that it was AGAINST the CBA for GS to accept the offer or rescinde and then negotiate a trade or sign-and-trade with the Rockets.

According to the CBA as long as all three parties (Mavs, Clipps, and Wang) agree the offer can be recinded, and then a sign & trade can be worked out.

In the Rockets situation with Jackson it would seem that either G.S. or Jackson didn't agree to recind the offer.

Well, looks like I was wrong. According to the NBA a sign & trade is no longer a possability.

Per Fort Worth Star Telegram/Art Garcia:

Wang's deal with the Clippers, also signed Monday night, is for three years and approximately $6 million. The Mavs have 15 days, starting today, to match or lose Wang without compensation.

According to the NBA, sign-and-trade deals involving players who have signed an offer sheet are not possible under terms of the collective bargaining agreement. Either a player is retained with a matching offer or lost without compensation.

The Mavs contacted the league Tuesday about Wang's offer sheet. Donnie Nelson, Mavs president of basketball operations, said the team is "weighing all options" with regards to Wang. Nelson hoped a sign-and-trade remained possible if the three sides -- Clippers, Wang and Mavs -- agreed to a withdrawal of the offer sheet.

The league said that is not an option.

The Clippers released a statement Tuesday stating the act of signing Wang "extinguishes any possibility of a sign-and-trade deal between the Clippers and the Mavericks."

could Cuban have goofed? w/both 'deals'? DC and St J were 'slapped' for talking last year about a SnT after the sign. And Marky Mark didn't know that?

It's almost funny. (I hope he loses both guys.)

Actually it turns out that the offer sheet for Wang wasn't sent to the Mavs until Wednesday. That means that the Mavs have until the 17th to match LA's offer. The offer sheet for Redd was sent to the Bucks on Tuesday so the Bucks have until the 16th to match the offer for Redd. Basically what this means is that Dallas will have at least one of them by the 16th.
