MILWAUKEE (AP) - A man attacked by a mob of children who savagely beat him with rakes, shovels and bats died Tuesday, as authorities arrested 10 youths and sought six others.

The juveniles, ages 10 to 18, attacked Charlie Young Jr. late Sunday after a fight that started when one of the children tossed an egg at him, police said.

Young, 36, suffered severe brain injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition after the beating. He died Tuesday, said Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital spokesman Mark McLaughlin.

"It was unhuman what they did," the victim's brother, Keith Young, told WTMJ-TV.

Police Chief Arthur Jones said as many as 20 young men who had gathered Sunday night prodded a 10-year-old to throw an egg at Young. The egg hit the Milwaukee man in the shoulder, and he started chasing the boy. But a 14-year-old got between the two and Young punched the older boy, knocking out a tooth.

Several of the youths then banded together and chased Young, picking up shovels, rakes, baseball bats, a folding chair and other items to beat him with, Jones said. When they reached the porch of a house, they pummeled him, leaving blood spattered from floor to ceiling, police said.

"They were pounding on him and hollering, 'Hey, let me use that.' It was like a game to them," said Anthony Brown, who lives in the house.

Young managed to briefly escape into the house, but the mob dragged him back outside and beat him until police responded to a neighbor's 911 call, the landlord said.

Residents and police said the neighborhood in Milwaukee's north side is rife with violence.

"Just to come home to trouble every night gets kind of tiresome," said Erinn Payne, 22, who witnessed the attack but walked by, thinking the children were beating an animal. "People are always fighting or arguing, there's always something going on."

Jones said "a large number of our enforcement efforts" are focused on the neighborhood.

The chief said Young apparently was a random victim.

"We have no reason to believe they (the youths) knew this was Mr. Young or they targeted Mr. Young," Jones said.

Four teens — three 13-year-olds and a 15-year-old — appeared in court Tuesday evening, where a court commissioner ordered that they be held in a detention facility until they are charged.

All 10 youths taken into custody could face charges as early as Wednesday, though Jones didn't know if they would be charged as adults or juveniles. Authorities continued to search for the six other suspects.

This world gets more and more screwed up every day.

Where were these kids' parents at? 16 kids (age 10-16) hanging out without any supervision.

Hopefully these kids enjoy their next few years in detention centers, or better yet jail.

Hopefully this man can take every last dime from all these kid's families (or at least the kids who were actively involved). Also hope that any kids who were there but were not actively involved have many bad dreams and sleepless nights.

It would be kinda difficult chuckie.
    He's dead.
That report fails to mention that the 10 yr old is also in custody.
I saw part of the court session for those kids, the judge was visibly upset. He was jumpin all in the parents **** about why they weren't supervised, why were they allowed to be hanging around together at that time..etc.

This is one of the most pathetic things I have ever seen. I heard some of the neighbors talking about the kids in that neighborhood, they said that the kids don't fear anyone and are always terrorizing the residents of the area.

Clear example of how just because you can sire a child, doesn't mean you are fit to raise them. I lay this square at the feet of the parents.

This part bothers me. She didn't call the police because "theres always something going on" and "I thought they were just beating an animal"??

The kids and their parents need to be held responsible for their actions and/or lack thereof.

    I figgered that out afterwards...;)

But still, from what I understood..the youths involved are from a low-income area. I wouldn't imagine the families have alot of money to get. I just hope the kids get what they deserve, not probabtion or anything like that. This was a vicious killing by a bunch of kids who care nothing for human life...

Did anyone else see the news footage of the hearing? That judge was highly upset..one of the parents tried to say something to him and he just snapped back at em about why were they out late and stuff like that..he was pissed!

actually..you're wrong...Milwaukee IS the only city with violent youths. weird, huh? :)

in all seriousness, this is disgusting...parents need to take their responsibilites far more seriously than they often do.

Man, that is terrible, but to try and justify what happened at K-MART with this out of line. I don't remember hearing about anybody being murdered, attacked, beaten, or intimidated at the parking lot. And I seriously doubt the 10 year old girl they arrested who was seperated from here father shared the same intentions as the Milwaukee one. Are there kids drag racing there who need to be arrested, hell yes, but I'm tired of hearing people trying to justify the arrest of hundreds of teenagers and young adults who happened to be there or nearby. I'm just amazed that there are people here who believe the Police did the right thing.

I heard this morning on the news that the 10yr old threw the egg. The 36yr old man started chasing him. A 14yr old got in the way to protect the 10yr old and the 36yr old man punched the 14yr old and knocked a few teeth out of his mouth, thus the beat down.
It doesn't make what these kids did right but if the 36 yr old would have survived we would be saying, "What the hell is wrong with this world?!?! A 36 yr old man punching the teeth out of a 14yr old kid?!"
I'm just sayin', inner-city America is pretty screwed up!:(

Does anyone know what part of Milwaukee this happened in? The article says it happened on the north side of Milwaukee which if it's the area I am thinking of, is pretty damn rough part of town. It's not exactly inner-city, but definitely not a good part of town.

OH MY GOSH! Iagree 100%!! Not just the parents and children but the community as a whole!! That is crazy that they were outside and no one could help him? I don't know, I strongly believe it takes a village to raise a child. My prayers go out to Mr.Young and his family.

I agree Mr. Oily. The man was wrong for punching the kid, but we only know the side from the kids. Their lawyers will say the kids killed the man in self defense. I could buy that if it was one blow to the head, but savagely beating the man like a pack of wild dogs is just too much.

Unfortunately this did not occur in Texas. Justice would be served.
