i have never been in a church like that. part of me wants to see it...the other part of me doesn't want to hear someone tell my I have no faith because I'm not speaking in tongues.

as an aside...the church I attend was in the news, yesterday:

Church sucks, hated when my parents brought me as a kid. I will never make my children suffer through it unless they ask me to go.

Haven't been to church in a long long long time, but the singing sounds like the fun part.

There is a large Unitarian church not far from where I live, and I want to check it out. You say they sing hymns, but what are they about? Unitarian's don't subscribe to any one theory on what God is, right? So, what would you sing about, since one person's God wouldn't be the same as the next person's? You can't really worship, since everyone there believes in a different god. I want to go just to understand it more.

Whats uncomfortable about spontaneous outbursts of speaking in tongues, people dressed in their Sunday best running laps around the auditorium cuz they're "on fire" with the Holy Spirit, people getting fainting spells, collapsing on the floor then getting carried off out the service?

Yeah singing doesnt seem so bad in comparison.

    pretty classy statement RR..

i understand the singing/worship thing being kinda annoying..

i think thats for people who've grown into the church a bit more..

i enjoy it.. most churches that don't have music are super traditional so you might get bored.. nobody says anything when you show up twenty minutes late..

worship is def. important, but i can totally understand how it could be unattractive..

how old are you, if you want meat.. i'd get into a bible study with some guys, really church is for worship more so than knowledge... when your in a study or small group you're involved with conversation rather than just listening to someone talk

The new testament speaks of singing and making melody in your heart to the lord, which is why the Church of Christ doesn't use instruments. The singing is supposed to be edifying, much like some people like karaoke, or singing together in groups.

    Someone mentioned "tongues"..
Speaking in tongues was a gift of the time, before the written word. It would be a gift that allowed an apostle to speak in a different, real language to a foreign people. They would believe the the speaker, who was speaking in a tongue that there should have been no possible way for him to know, other than it being a gift from God.
Snake venom was shaken off, having no affect on those spreading the word of God. Some churches handle snakes, thinking they are gifted from harm.
There is also writting that states when the time of the gifts would cease, basically being when the full testament was complete.
Tongue speakers and snake handlers evidently believe otherwise.

Believe in it or not, there are several differing views on such matters, which is why there are so many different denominations.

He seems to be mainly against the singing, so I think he may be in favor of the dancing.

Singing is part of praise and worship. When you understand the 'meat' of the service then you will understand that singing is necessary.

If you don't want to sing, don't sing but give the service and sermon proper attention. It'll save your life. ;)

Don't listen to this guy. It's the Aussies' fault that contemporary Christian music sucks because they gave us Hillsong.

When I was Methodist, I could go to 11 AM service and make it home in time to catch kickoff. Services was two or three hymns, offering, 10-15 minute sermon, go home.

    Become a frisbetarian.

Every Sunday go to a park, thank god for the beautiful weather and then play frisbee for an hour to be closer to god.

Then when you die your soul will fly up on the roof of the house and stay there for eternity.
