    BBC News

Two Israeli soldiers convicted of using a Palestinian child as a human shield during an offensive in Gaza in 2009 have received suspended sentences and been demoted.

The soldiers had forced the nine-year-old boy to open suspected booby-trapped bags at gunpoint.

It occurred during Israel's three-week conflict with Hamas, which rules Gaza.

It was reportedly the first such conviction in Israel, where the use of civilians as human shields is banned.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said the pair will be on probation for two years, AFP news agency reported.

During the soldiers' trial in October, the boy, Majid Rabah, said he feared for his life.

"I thought they would kill me. I became very scared and wet my pants," he said in an affidavit.

Majid Rabah's mother, Fatma, criticised the sentence as too lenient.

"It is completely unfair, because it was supposed to be more than this. Honestly, the fear that we felt in those moments, the fear that came after that and the negative side-effects to the child - [the soldiers] deserve more."

The soldiers' lawyer, Ilan Katz, however, said the sentence was appropriate.

"The fact that the court didn't decide to put the two accused in the prison speaks clearly that even the military court didn't think that in this case it was right to make a trial against the two soldiers because what they have done, they have done during a hard war when their life was under a big and serious danger."

Israel launched its offensive in December 2008 following a barrage of Palestinian rocket attacks from the territory.

Some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed during 22 days of fighting.

Well, they got sentenced. The Palestinians have been holding an Israeli soldier hostage for years. Did anyone get sentenced? Did the "authorities" try to free him and hand him over to his family?

All they got is a little slap on the wrist? Cute.

It's just like what we did in Vietnam

Don't get me wrong, what they did is very wrong. I also think they should have probably received a harsher sentence. Still, they got sentenced.

Fair enough, but there will always be a double standard in this type of situation between the oppressed and the oppressor. I'm not saying it's right, but that's the way it is.

Soldiers are fair game in war, children aren't.

I agree that children aren't, but there are also rules on how to deal with soldiers, even in war. Plus, Israeli children have been killed in suicide bombings.

If a Palestinian kills a 9 year old Israeli kid with a suicide bomb, he or she will be portrayed as a martyred hero.

Here the IDF guys got punished. There's your double standard right there.

Actually Israel pretty much makes up its own rules as far as killings, assassinations, invasions, occupations, etc. They use attack helicopters on residential apartment buildings, plant car bombs, you name it and they do it.

And the number of Palestinian kids killed by Israeli troops far exceeds any number of Israeli kids killed by suicide bombings. It's stupid for you to even bring that up.

I am pretty sure that if the disparity in firepower was the other way around, most probably all Israelis would have been killed already.

The scale of the current Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories would never have happened in the first place if your hypothetical were true, so that is not a fair comparison.

If you gave all the weapons the Israelis have right now to the Palestinians - what do you think would happen?

It's funny how education, freedom and opportunity can make one more civilized. Wow, what a concept I just came up with! If only people knew about this.

So you are saying Israelis are more civilized than Palestinians (status quo)?

The number of rocks that remain on the ground would increase.

But that's like asking, "What would some African American slaves do in the early 19th century if they were given the right, and access, to bear arms?"

Comparing the majority of one group to the majority of the other group, yes, absolutely.

    I don't think there's any denying this.

Israel is a modern, first world country with access to first world amenities.

sLaNd B a L L a, knowing you have been there - do you realistically think there will be a peaceful solution within the next 20 years that will remain stable?
