Nuggets get Pack, Cheaney DENVER, Oct. 16 — The Denver Nuggets have acquired guard Robert Pack and guard-forward Calbert Cheaney from the Boston Celtics in exchange for guards Bryant Stith and Chris Herren, President and Head Coach Dan Issel announced today. "We're excited to be adding a pair of proven veterans," said Issel. "Both players will strengthen our already deep bench." Pack, 6-2, 190, returns to the Nuggets after a five-year hiatus. The nine-year veteran averaged 10.5 ppg and 5.3 apg in 185 games for the Nuggets from 1992-95 and helped lead the club to two of its three postseason appearances in the 1990s. Pack played in 29 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season, averaging 8.9 ppg and 5.8 apg. He was acquired by the Celtics from Dallas on Aug. 16, as part of a four-team, nine-player deal. He spent the last three-plus seasons with the Mavericks and also played for New Jersey ('96-97) and Washington ('95-96) after being traded by the Nuggets to the Wizards on Oct. 30, 1995 (in exchange for Don MacLean and Doug Overton). Cheaney, who will be entering his eighth NBA campaign, averaged 4.0 ppg and 2.1 rpg in 67 games for the Celtics last season. He signed with Boston as a free agent before last season after spending his first six years with the Washington Wizards. He has averaged 11.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg in 491 career games. His best season came in '94-95, when he averaged 16.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 2.3 apg in 78 games for Washington. The 6-7, 217, swingman averaged at least 10.0 ppg in each of his first five seasons. Stith, who was drafted by the Nuggets with the 13th overall pick of the 1992 NBA Draft, departs after eight seasons in Denver in which he averaged 10.9 ppg and 3.5 rpg. He leaves ranked 11th on the Nuggets all-time games played list (458), 17th in scoring (4,982) and 21st in rebounding (1,614). Herren, who was selected by the Nuggets in the second round of the 1999 draft (33rd overall), averaged 3.1 ppg and 2.5 apg in 45 games as a rookie last season. ------------------ This signature space for rent call 555 ...
