A few months ago, I was playing at a bar and the hot waitress told me I could get a free beer if I gave her my cell # and showed her the text she was about to send me. Of course I did it (hello...free beer) and of course ever since then, I've been getting hammered with text spam - including texts from that bar advertising their specials every Friday night.

What's the best way to stop it? I hear that if you reply with "opt out" or whatever, you just end up getting more, since they know it's a valid #.

"Free" beer, huh? At A Cost.

Seriously, though: Call the bar and ask them?

You showed her the text she was about to send YOU? Pronoun?

Who's your carrier? I know that on some carriers you can input a number to block online through your account settings.

You can call your provider and ask them to block all spam text messages. Best way to go.. Those things get annoying.

Go back to said bar, find waitress, wait until no one is looking, break her nose, take off like souljaboy.

If it tells you that you can opt out follow the instructions. Y'all guys are way too paranoid.

Thanks as always, SwoLy... I'm sure if I just call them and tell them to stop they'll apologize profusely and immediately stop. And so would all the companies the bar sold my # to.

    Verizon.

Will that block ALL text messages? I don't want that. Plus I would assume they're using some kind of program that masks where the texts are coming from. Not the bar itself, just the "companies" that the bar no doubt sold my # to.

Yeah, because companies that spam random cellphone #'s are so reputable. I'm sure they would immediately stop if I asked them too. Incidentally, I did that a month ago and now I'm getting twice as much as I did before...

How often do you get them? I get maybe 2 or so spam messages a week from Dominoes and Top Chef, but I couldn't care less as I have unlimited text messages.

 It was merely a suggestion. You didn't say you had done that already, that's why I said that.

Dude, you're not the only one getting the spam... but... I bet that if you DO call them, and ask them why they did that, they'll stop. You can stop them from doing this to other peeps. You may even have a lawsuit in your hands 'cuz you didn't get a "terms of contract" from them and they didn't say they'd sell your phone #.

Will you accept a free beer again, though? :p

Usually, you are supposed to text "STOP" to the number.

I have Verizon too. If you block the spam messages it won't interfere with your normal text messages. They can block the spam text messages that come up with a number such as : 51429.

Is it a legit number that they are texting you from or is it one of those 5 or 6 digit numbers?

Just call your carrier. I work at Sprint and blocking these types of spam messages for customers literally takes like 20 seconds.

They are real numbers. One of them is even a 713 number. I googled them both and lots of people are getting calls/texts from them as well. One guy answered a call and said they offered him a $50 Walmart gift card for $3.99 - if he would just give them his CC#, they would send him the gift card right away. LOL.

I wonder how these "companies" stay in business.

Maybe 4 or 5 a week, but I.....wait a minute.....you're getting texts from Top Chef? How did that happen?

I texted the show when it prompted me on one of the episodes this summer.

Text CHEF to 27286. (lol. More spam for you.)

BTW, Top Chef All Stars begins in less than 2 weeks.

You can call Verizon and they can block up to 5 phone numbers for you. This will block them from texting you or calling you.

You can also opt of the 5 digit spam texts while you're on the phone with them if you'd like.

I've give that a try, although I wish it was more than 5. The 5 digit will take care of that damn bar, though. Note to self: there is no such thing as free beer.

Awesome. The only show on Bravo I can watch for more than 2 minutes without wanting to put my nutsack into a food processor and press "liquid".

That Gail Simmons really has a nice set of cans....and I say that with the greatest of respect, of course.
