Another aspect is that the Rockets have some great scorers in Francis, Mobley, Taylor, also Griffin and Thomas already. Gasol did not have that many weapons and could take over more easily. I HOPE Yao Ming will be a 15/8 guy right away, but give him time, that's all I say.

Ming should start out because he is older, already a pro, and more talented than Smith our Brown. Brown wasn't given a chance either, like Eddie Curry.

    SRJ,

The point is that Griffin did not put up big numbers last year by any stretch, didn't make the rookie all-star team and wasn't 1st team rookie, either. But everyone hear knew he was the real deal with one month.

stats aside, we will know by December whether Ming is a bust (for a #1 pick) or the real deal (potential as #1 or 2 best players in the draft).

It is difficult for a skilled center to be a bust in the league these days. After all, there aren't many centers left. Ming may not put up the best numbers among all rookies, but he will prove to be most valuable.

I think these numbers will be very close(if less) to his actual numbers this year.
No way he only scores 10 pts. a game. I would be disappointed if he did, he's too versatile offensively.

rice rocket:- We need to call him Yao Ming, not reversed ,not Yao or Ming! I was quite surprised by this, but my Chinese family told me the polite way! After all we don't wish to insult him do we?

Foreign players suffer from cultural shock, home sickness, and language barrier that can depress them into low production during their transition stage. I won't declare Yao as a bust or the real deal after one season. Give him three years and if he can't average over 15/8 after that I'll consider him as a bust.

BTW, does anyone beside me that regards Kandi as a bust at 11 points, 9 rebounds and 43% fgp after 4 yrs in the league?

If we only expect him to post Cato numbers for 3 years we should have drafted Jay Williams. Yao Ming must be legit out of the box or he's a bust. Olowokandi is a bust.

Yes, Olowokandi is a bust. So is Joe Smith.

But Kwami Brown is NOT a bust. Not yet anyways. Remember, this guy
came into the league from HIGH SCHOOL!!!

It takes three years to develop those type of players.

McGrady, Kobe, J. O'neal, Shawn Kemp, Moses Malone all struggled their
first 3 years too. Kevin Garnett was probably the only exception.
He was able to contribute in defense immediately.

You have to give him about two years to adapt to the league. He is sure to be facing culture shock so I think it would be fair to judge Yao as a player in about 2-3 years.

The numbers don't make the man, the man makes the numbers. Yao could score one point per game and still leave a great impact. I don't think we could say based on rebounds or points whether he is good or not, i mean what if he fouls Shaq out? Do that show on the numbers? Even if it doesn't, it leaves an impact. Don't listen to me, I'm rambling.....

Also look for "how" his points are scored. We don't want to see this guy become another Euro type center that drifts out of the paint trying to hit 12 foot jumpers. You can't win a championship without defense, and the only all-star center I can think of that played wimpy d was Ewing. I want to see Ming mix it up inside. Bloody some elbows. Throw down a few dunks, and block a few shots. More important to me than points, should be boards and blocks. The Rockets have no intimidation in the middle, and Ming was drafted to help with that problem.

To see whether Yao Ming is a good deal (he is certainly not a bust). Judge him on his defense, how he alter the opposite team's offense, the part he can contribute most for Rox.
