The defense in the first 3 quarters will not be the same as the defense in the 4th quarter. Paul needed to make outside shots to keep defense honest in the 4th quarter but he didnt. Teams will play Chris Paul in playoffs the same way as they will play L. James. Keep them out of the lane by packing it and and force them to take outside shots. Lebron James has seen why it is necessary to make the outside shots (see finals against Spurs). Both, Williams and Paul are excellent PGs and Paul might actually be slightly better in other facets of the game but that difference is not big enough to offset Williams advantage when it comes to hitting outside shots... ...which is why I will still take him over Chris Paul. PS. This is not based on one game. Deron Williams has a better outside shot than Chris Paul. If you are disagreeing with this then we can stop right there.
You would consider LeBron in the "Best goalkeeper in the Champions League (european soccer)" contest too. It's like saying that if someone is a good rebounder then he is a center. So: naw.
I'm sure you've done an extensive analysis of Chris Paul's 4th quarter shooting over the course of a significant number of games. And I'm sure your analysis takes into account the fact that Paul is hitting over 40% of his 3's this season. Yeah, all 0.006 3PT% and +0.2 3PM per game for their careers. Much better than averaging almost two rebounds and two steals more, and a turnover less. Paul has a knack for getting and keeping the ball, and will give his team significantly more possessions than Deron does.
Dwight Howard was held to just 7 rebounds (0 offensive) against the Miami Heat a couple weeks ago, in a brutal 26 point loss. The Heat turned on the pressure and Udonis Haslem schooled him for 11 points and 11 rebounds in just 22 minutes off the bench. The Magic are so soft inside. Dwight will never take his team to the Finals unless he works on his fundamentals and learns how to rebound and box out.
I feel like CP3 has done more with less than either D-Will or Rondo, so my vote goes to CP3. D-Will has the most balanced set of skills, Rondo is unbelievably athletic, all three are great point guards.
Honestly Rondo sucks. Doesnt he shoot less then 50% from the free throw line? Hes only droppin all them dimes because hes got the big three to make him look good. Any point guard would see there assists go up in that system, Nash would average 20 a game if he played for Bumston Rose >> Rondo
If all these assists are coming because of the rest of the team, then how come Rondo is 5 assists better a game this year? He's tossing the ball to the same guys. He doesn't shoot well from outside, but right now he's the best passer and the best defender at his position. I'm staying out of the best point guard debate. But Rondo's no product of his team. He gives them as much or more than he gets from them.
His 3pt FG%will come down over the season. Small sample size. Career Playoffs 3 pt FG% Deron Williams-40.3% Chris Paul-27.0% Furthermore, the disparity in FG% and 3pt FG% for Chris Paul is obvious, close to 10% difference, which pretty much indicates that he is a better threat closer to the basket. This is also obvious when watching them play. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to be taking Chris Paul over Deron Williams to take long shots when the game in on the line. 4th quarter of that game was just an example. Something you are having a hard time understanding. If Deron Williams was put in that same situation, chances are he would have taken the last two 3 pointers coming off the screen instead of passing to Trevor Ariza (seriously? Ariza?).
a passing and defending pg isn't going to do that great without people around him who can score, he has a lot of those, kg, allen and pierce can all score and score big consistently, even at this stage of their careers. The funny thing is, someone like Rose would be superfluous to a team like Boston, it's not just the team benefitting Rondo, it's that the team needs a pg like Rondo.
But Rondo does do great without those guys. Every time one or two of Pierce, Allen, and Garnett go out- Rondo turns into a scorer, and an effective one at that. He drives more and scores more, but maintains his efficiency. (He's usually at the top of pgs in fg%. So far this season he's been a little off in that stat.)
CB just owning. RB's only argument is that DW is taller and a better defender, and CB just tore him apart. At this point in time, CP3 is the better player, its not even close. He's producing more with an obviously inferior cast with a rookie headcoach/gm tandem in one of the poorest franchises in the league. People don't realize but $$$ goes a long way towards winning, and its not just players. With more $$$ you can have better trainers, better facilities to exercise in, a more thorough preparation program, etc. I agree though that Deron Williams is the better scorer, defender (due to Sloan's teachings) and healthier player, but using 3 pt playoff percentage isn't really a good argument because CP3 has had rubbish teammates (causing his percentages to drop) while D-will has had an allstar cast and has managed to fight inferior teams in the playoffs again and again (sadly including us). CP3 is the better playmaker though, if want you want is a creating pg who can be the heart and soul of your franchise he is it. IF you already have good players and want a scorer/clutch guy you can go to down the stretch ala Kobe, then D-will is the better fit.
Funny how you talk about stats "over the season" and how people shouldn't use "small sample size" when as I pointed out Deron's career 3PT% is a mere 0.006 higher, and Deron has only made 0.2 more 3PT shots per game. You can't even stay consistent. You talk about using a larger sample size, then jump immediately to playoff stats when you know damn well that that's a much smaller sample. Chris Paul has all of 17 playoff games. Yeah he didn't shoot well from behind the arc...in a dozen 2008 playoff games he still averaged 24.1 ppg on 0.502 FG%. Clearly opponents were just packing it in and shutting him down What is this "close to 10% difference" you speak of? It can't be from the small sample size of 17 playoff games, because the difference there between Paul's 3PT% and overall FG% is 21%. Are you talking about his regular season stats? Again, be consistent. Anyway, this isn't even a point because career averages of 0.355 3PT% and 0.473 FG% from a PG are nothing to be ashamed of at all. Kobe's career averages are 0.34 3PT% and 0.455 FG%...wow Kobe sucks at outside shooting and opposing teams shut him down just by packing it in? Am I getting this right? Are you really acting as if a 10% difference from a good 3PT% up to a good FG% is somehow a weakness? Chris Paul gets penalized for being a good overall scorer? Why do you keep focusing on this one facet of the game, and using it to argue that Deron is the better player? The better player is the guy who's simply better, when everything is accounted for. If Deron Williams were in that game, he would've very likely missed several more shots already, along with making 2 less steals. Or do you think Deron shoots 9-16 in his average game?
Paul, even though Deron is the better shooter from outside, how many teams can consistently keep Paul from getting inside? Scoring and size advantage doesn't make up for what Paul does better than DWill.
First couple of games in a regular season is not the same as games from playoffs. Different defense under heavy scouting. That Paul's 3pt FG% in the playoffs was much worse than his FG% and his regular season fg% tells me more. He is either a choker (which I dont think he is). Or he is not comfortable with long range attempts under pressure. 17 playoff games. That was a typo. Should have been 20%. Again that is a big big difference. Taking and hitting 3 pointers in regular season is not the same as taking and making them in playoffs. Why do you think his FG% for the season stayed the same but his 3pt FG% came crashing down in the playoffs? Nope. What I am saying is that considering they are close players overall, I would rather go with Deron Williams because of his ability to create space and take those long jumpers. That is a big asset in my book in a close game during the playoffs. I have seen him take and make several big shots (long range) in the playoffs. Nope. More like D. Williams gets a bonus in my book. Like I said, I value his outside shooting (one of the best clutch shooters in the game today). Others might not.
If you ask me who would I take to start a new team at the PG position today, I would take DWill. Paul came out of the gates faster as a rookie and has considerably more flash to his game(maybe Sloan won't let Dwill do the flashy stuff) but DWill has been more consistent and frankly, he's a better closer too. You can make statistical arguments for Paul but in the end I'm much more scared of what Deron is going to do with the ball in his hands in the 4th quarter of a tight game than what Paul is going to do.
