A lot of people that have similar musical tastes to my own all love Beck. I don't totally hate him or anything, but he never struck me as being all that great, and on occasion annoys me. Frank Black was with the Pixies before, but has come out as solo artist since then. I sometimes have to use a dictionary to look up the meaning of his words. I had know idea what Choragic meant until I heard it in a Frank Black song and looked it up. He rhymed it with Pelagic, which I had an idea what it meant, but I looked that one up to just to be sure. Also certain songs of his use a meter that is very cleverly crafterd. So if he qualifies as the last ten years, I'll put him above Beck. A little known band called Possum Dixon also goes above Beck in my book. But overall it's been a pretty thin decade as far as credible music goes.
Frank Black rocks!!!! Pixies Rock!!!! Midnight Vultures was good. I really don't like folk music, though. Filter it through an urban conciousness, deliver an edge like the Velvets, ok; but that coffeehouse stuff is pure naptime.
I'm an opera singer, so when I'm thinking of the best musical artists of the last ten years it would probably include a lot of names that ya'll wouldn't know. Well, I've listened to almost no Beck at all, so now I'm very curious. I'll go educate myself. If consistency and diversity and creativity are criterion, I would nominate Tori Amos and Bjork. For production I would nominate Timbaland, the best producer in hip-hop, period. His beat laying is so supreme, he is from another planet. I'll buy CD's of artists that I don't even like that much if I know he's laying the tracks. Amazing. Manny- Massive Attack is the bomb. I only have Mezzanine and Teardrop right now, but I'll get the earlier two and they've got a new one coming up. As I tell all my friends, Massive Attack is the best 'f*ck me slow and hard' music in the world.
Radiohead or Phish! Music is so subjective and open to opinion. I'm personally not a Beck fan, but for my money, it doesn't get better than these 2 groups.
Yeah, I think the lines were more along "pop-type" artist. Obviously none of these people are the real "best" in terms of talent.
I'll add Radio to my list. In my opinion they are more creative and innovative than Beck. I think they are definitely one of the most innovative bands in the past ten years.
Beck is the only artist today whose album I automatically buy no matter what. I heard his latest was kind of slow and sad though. Who cares I'm buying it anyway on Wednesday. Almost a senior member...........
just listened to "Mutations" followed by "Odelay" after reading this thread. .... how refreshing. I love Beck's sense of Blues Style. It is unique. now I really have something to look forward to next week!
WOW. this new album is amazing. I am listening to it right now. talk about mellow, hypnotic, soothing.
It does? I'll have to check it out. I've had a hard time with Beck since I saw him on "The Larry Sanders Show" on HBO. He was being deliberately awful. It was really funny!
