I recently had to have one of my vehicles towed to a mechanic. I would like to file a claim with my auto insurance company (State Farm) as I have coverage for this. What I am afraid of is this causing my rate to go up. Will any claim make rates rise or is it primarily accidents and traffic citiations that do this?
Your rate won't increase because you have free towing through State Farm. Now a traffic citation that's a different story.
Towing coverage is not the same as coverage for collision/comp/liability, therefore, it is not a "claim". It is basically the same thing as having AAA or any type of roadside assistance. Now, if you have already had the vehicle towed, and paid on your own, you are probably out of luck as far as coverage and reimbursement for it.
I already had it towed but it has on the website where I can file a "claim" for it. I guess I'll try, all they can do is reject the "claim".
Yeah, they'll essentially give you a check, kind of like a reimbursement as said above. And it won't affect your rates at all, it's included in your coverage.
Most carriers have to be notified up front so they can use their own tow service to mitigate the rates. If State Farm allows you to file after the fact, then definitely go for it. You might get back some part or all of the tow fee you paid.
It all depends on the agreement. I had free towing up to $50.00. $50.00 gets your car out of the intersection.
Not sure if you live in Houston. If you do, that is absolutely correct. The Houston area has the worst tow fees anywhere in the US.
Well, I filed the claim this afternoon and received a call from State Farm about 6:30. We just went over what happened, how much the tow was, the distance towed and other info. I just have to fax in my receipt with the claim number attached and I'll be reimbursed. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.
