Just curious question for those who watch these type of shows.

I'm the type who almost never watch the interview portion(s) of late night shows. I find them boring and usually awkward, even comedians I otherwise find very funny. So I usually just leave after the monologue/skits.

Meh. Only if the guest is neat.

But how do you know? I've generally found the biggest stars to be the most boring. They never talk about anything remotely interesting, and keeps everything rated G.

If anything, in the handful of interviews I've watched, it's actually the guests I've never heard of who generally come off the best. Probably because they don't have PR guys telling them what they can and can't say.

I watch the guests on Stu-beef and Colbert because most of them have something significant to say and they're a lot of writers that I respect.

The only other late night show I watch is Conan and I occasionally watch the guest depending on who it is, I enjoy Coco's unique(goofy) interviewing style.

I will generally only watch if it is another funny person or someone the host has a lot of chemistry with. On Conan, I always make sure I catch interviews with guys like Tom Hanks or Will Ferrel, but generally, I skip them.

I didn't mention this but I agree. But I think Colbert is a bit different

No doubt, Stuart is the best interview in late night by far.

Colbert constantly interrupts and trys to deliver a steady stream of punch line after punch line. That said, in the context of his character, it's amusing.

Only if there's some chemistry for humor or the guest is hot.

Rebecca Romijn (which Conan was seriously smitten for before he was married) fulfilled both of those requirements. Christopher Walken and Mr. T were very memorable guests on Conan too, I laughed to the point of crying when they were on...I think this was back when Andy was still his sidekick and Mr T. was on frequently because they needed to fill guest spots.

The interviews with "weird" guests (Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera) or outrageous drug/alcohol fueled personalities (Chris Farley, Artie Lange) tend to be entertaining, but I find standard sit-downs to be awkward/boring.

I actually just meant that the Stewart/Colbert Shows themselves are different, I would not include in the same style as a traditional late night talk show. I actually much prefer Colbert to Stewart

Well now you're just crossing the line. ;)

They air daily at the same time as traditional late night shows, they're competing for the same ratings.

Stuart has been the best n late night for the past 5 years imo.

I usually don't care about the interviews, but I always end up watching Conan's interviews because of the comedy he interjects into them.

Some hosts are way better than others at doing this. Ferguson is the best, imo. He can bring out the best personality of most of his guests and make it entertaining. Like this for example.

I always watch the interviews, but that doesn't mean I always like them.

I never cared much for Leno's interviews.
Letterman's interviews are horrible now, which is a shame because he used to be so good.
    Kimmel is awkward, but solid.
Fallon is always creative and entertaining.
    Conan is solid.
Ferguson is probably the best interview on late night.
I don't really watch Colbert or Stewart unless someone links them to me. The one's I've watched have been hilarious, but that's like judging an athlete using highlight reels.
Lopez is absolute crap. I've only watched a couple, but he's really bad.

I personally enjoy the interviews, but my interest varies depending on the host and guest. The best interviews are when the hosts doesn't try to dominate the interview. Interview gold is when the host can prompt the guest and the guest can go on telling stories for the entire segment.

Very solid night on Conan. Julie Bowen is a dime-piece. Conan damn near fell out of his seat when she sat down.

Oh yes. Great show. Coincidentally I've mentioned before in the Modern Family thread that I have a thing for Julie Bowen so that worked out well. The stand up act was great too.
