Anybody else catch this show? The treasure hunter in me found yet another show to go along with Pawn Stars and American Pickers. It also amazes me how much valuable stuff people let go because they don't pay their storage fees.
I cringed when he took that plasma torch to that safe. I kept saying to myself, "I bet you some cool papers are in there". Then out popped that H&K. It was a cool show. I thought it was Bam Bam Biggalo for a sec....then realized he has been gone for awhile now.
Been watching this show all day. Way better than pickers in my opinion. I think the people on Pickers is way more annoying.
Auction hunters is a fake show. I watch it, but it has a certain amount of contrivance. Storage Wars is more realistic. They have an episode on Storage Wars were the winning bid when for $9000.00 Also, I think Dave Hester is a BSer. According to him, he never loses money on a locker and always overprices his "finds" for the show.
The difference I see is that whereas Auction Hunters clearly employ actors. Storage Wars' bidders, Hester, Brandi and Jarrod, Barry, are real buyers that make a living in the industry. I do like the entertainment value, but I take the fast money slant with a severe grain of salt.
Yeah definitely like Storage Wars. All reality tv is scripted to some extent. But watching them go at each other is pretty fun and it's cool to see the stuff they uncover. And it's just like those house flipping shows back during the housing boom. People watch that stuff and think it's so easy, but it's far from it. This is no different. We only see probably a fraction of the lockers they actually buy. The big finds we see on the show may be the only big finds during several months of filming or however long it takes. Otherwise it's trying to maximize every single penny out of that locker to make a profit. But I do think Hester way overprices some of his stuff. And I also don't like how they list the profit on the locker as if they already sold that stuff. For all we know some of those items are still rotting away in their store. Last episode though, priceless to see that new guy Mark flash his money and overbid on a locker. He thinks he scores big finding an opened and dirty Nintendo ES and takes it to Gamestop. The thing didn't even work and the guy only offered 10 bucks for it. He though he would get 10K!
Yeah, I love how they keep giving that dude a hard time for carrying his money around in a purse. He's a pretty strange guy. When you guys say you think the show is contrived, do you mean that they set up certain reactions ahead of time, or do you think the entire thing is faked? I ask because every show seems to follow a predictable pattern and I find it hard to believe that these lockers would go that way so often. I've started to suspect the show-runners plant a lot of the "finds" that come out of these lockers.
Funny how shows tend to run in cycles. Went through a cycle of "flipper" shows, then "survival" shows, then "fisher" shows, and now "picker" shows. I like the Pawn Stars show the nest because the characters are the most likeable. Just as when the American Chopper jumped the shark when the show focused on the family fighting, the characters on Storage Wars are hard to like (Jerrod and Brandy and Barry are likeable, but Dave and Darrell are annoying at best, and it now appears they brought in someone even more disagreeable). Also the "profit" they claim is unrealistic. I also don't like the two characters on American Pickers. Again, the profit they claim is unbelievable, and there is something really odd about their relationship. The one new show of the genre I like is Picker Sisters. And for the obvious reason... two extremely hot looking girls. And they actually seem like friends. They also at least try to suggest doing things different with the crap they buy. But again, if they weren't attractive I wouldn't even watch the first episode. Amazing how much I have avoided regular network TV and watch the "reality" shows on History, Discovery, and Travel. My favorite shows are the odd ones... Billy the Exterminator, Destination Truth, Ice Road Truckers, Top Shot, and Hillbilly Handfishing (who would have thought noodlin' would rate a TV show?).
I love all three storage locker shows, and check out auction kings too about a guy who runs an auction house in atlanta. DD
People that do this for a living or even for a little money on the side must HATE these shows. I bet they get run out and/or have their prices driven up all the time now from amatuers that don't know what they are doing, but looking to make a quick buck.
