Where is the best place to get a good deal at, and does name brand matter?
Also how can I tell if my laptop is compatible with the 3.0 usb as opposed to the 2.0 usb.

I dont' think there is any laptops out there that have 3.0 capabilites yet.. I know you can buy a card that fits in the expansion slot that can give you this..

Well looking at external HD's make sure you find one with an active cooling fan.. I've gone through 1/2 dozen external HD's and come to find out they all suck (doesn't matter on brand) if it doesn't have a cooling fan... So I got this Max 4 Cooling with a Western Digital Baclk 1TB HD and has been a BEAST...

Just remember Heat kills Hard Drives..

    I bought a 2TB from Fry's last week for $99.

Check the sales ad for weekly specials.

Newegg.com always have internal and external hard drives on sale for good prices.

You can also buy a good internal Hard Drive (usually cheaper than an external) or take an old Hard Drive and reformat it then buy an external Hard Drive enclosure. Probably save a couple bucks.

Might want to specify 2.5" or 3.5" when talking about prices and cooling.

What Casey said. Are you looking for a full size external? (3.5)...or one of those ones to fit in your pocket?

Check your local ads, lots of retailers normally have really good deals.

Honestly, I'd wait till Black Friday time though.

Staples last year had 1TB Seagates for ~$40.

Keep an eye on Amazon Gold Box. I see 1.5 TB external drives there all the time for under $80.

That's a nice phailed picture and all, but how long do you have to camp outside of the door to get that stuff?

For a hard drive? You usually don't need to camp outside. TVs and laptops are when you need to go way early.

Heat also kills older laptops. Keep a big old Antec notebook 200 cooler under my laptop.

    Best I have ever used.

usb 3.0 is backward compatible to usb 2

There is several laptops with usb 3 I looked at a Samsung one just a week ago.
