Sorry for starting another music thread so soon (well not really :p ), but I am wanting some help on indie music. I never know what bands are currently the "in thing" when it comes to indie and what bands that were "in" are now "out". Example of this is Interpol - everybody except for moes loved them in the beginning. Their 3rd release was on a major label and I guess they are no longer considered indie? Or maybe they are, who knows - that is what so confusing to me about "indie rock". Same thing with Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, or any other band that was considered a hot "indie" band several years ago. If you were indie in '07, you are probably now mainstream in '10 or is that really the case. And is Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo always considered indie bands?

So, those of you (most obviously Brightside) who are rabid indie fans, who are the best ones out there right now? Which bands are the quintessential indie groups like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo? Would Interpol qualify?

Animal Collective, TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, and Deerhunter - they are still all indie?

Some people categorize indie as being the band that isn't big and is with the indie label.. others categorize indie as being the "genre" of music, however they do that

but at least the no longer have a crispin glover-lookalike in a nazi outfit who wears a gun holster as a fashion accessory in their band, so thats a plus in my book.

Was he the bassist? I just saw them at Verizon, and whoever the new guy was didn't suck at all with the old stuff. Interpol died with the label change I thought was the common belief.

the album is **** and Carlos knew it. He basically half assed it just to help the guys out. You can really notice in the lack his basslines in 3/4 of the songs.

I really like the Wolf Parade - Expo 86 album that came out earlier this year. I never listened to any of their earlier stuff if that makes a difference.

These bands have released some of my favorite albums this year and could be labeled "indie":

    Deerhunter
    Yeasayer
    Beach House
    Local Natives
    Arcade Fire
    Vampire Weekend
    Twinshadow
    The National
    LCD Soundsystem
    Titus Andronicus
    Of Montreal

Let me know if you need additional info on any of them.

Definitely not up to the standards of their other recent albums, but I still enjoyed quite a bit of it.
