Phil: Lakers could be 0-7 before Shaq's back
    Howard Beck, LA Daily News

"All I know is, looking at our schedule, there's a very likely possibility that if Shaq took a full eight weeks (to recover), that we could be 0-7 at that particular time,' Jackson said. "We start out with San Antonio, Portland, the Clippers, Portland again and then go on a three-game road trip to the East, which is a situation that could put us behind the 8-ball to start the season.'

There is an outside chance O'Neal will be ready to play opening night, Oct. 29. If he can't, the Lakers will turn to a combination of Samaki Walker and Slava Medvedenko and perhaps a radically different style of play.

Noting the Lakers went 7-8 without O'Neal last season, Jackson said he might ditch the conventional triangle offense in favor of a more open-floor style that maximizes Kobe Bryant's playmaking and scoring skills.

(Bryant apparently is ready for the extra workload; according to Jackson, Bryant added 10 to 15 pounds of muscle this summer. "He really looks really big,' he said.)

Either that or finally be able to successfully drop an elbow that would keep Bibby out of the game.

Bryant needs to be aware of how that extra baggage will affect his quickness. Jerry Rice put on an extra 15 pounds of muscle at the beginning of this football season, but had to shed it after he lost too much quickness/speed.

True, but MJ didn't win any titles until he bulked up. I think Kobe's going in the right direction if he wants to improve his game, he needs more strength to be a great post player and tougher defender.

I think this is it (from the linked article):

Webber could go to prison. You don't know what's going to happen to him,' Jackson said. "What's Vlade? 35, 36? He's getting to an age now that's starting to be something you have to contend with, conditioning and ability to stay on the floor. And without him, it's a different ballclub. We know that.

"They got a career year out of (Mike) Bibby, who was in a free-agent year. They are better, they're a more athletic team. But we still think, given what we've got, someone's still going to have to take it away from us.'

As much as I dislike Kobe, I must admit, it's mostly because he can back up his arrogance.

The Lakers will never go 0-7 as long as they have Samaki Walker. The guy gets to score during halftime, for Pete's sake.

I thought the way it went was that he didn't bulk up till after he came back for the second threepeat run when his quickness had deteriorated and he had to compensate?

    ;)

Nothing wrong with adding 10-15 lbs of muscle, just as long as he keeps it and doesn't try to gain more.

If post counts don't mean anything, or are over rated, then why are they taken away?
