Looking at the NL stats entering today's play, he is: 4th in ERA (2.92) 3rd in W-L (19-7) 4th in innigns pitched (222.0) 5th in strikeouts (196) All of this from a guy in his second full season in the majors. If he continues to develop, in time he will be one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers in the league. These stats at this point in his career is scary. GO ROY, GO!!!!!
I don't follow baseball anymore, so how long is this guy signed? When it comes time to re-up, he may just take your advice and "go".
I don't think he'll even be arbitration eligible for a few more years...then a couple yers more to free agency. What remains of the reserve clause gives the club rights to him for 6 years. He was drafted in either 1999 or 2000...then he's arbitration eligible.
Oswalt and Wade Miller make a dynamic duo. Drayton would be wise to lock these guys up to long term deals in the near future.
By the time comes to lock them up Bags and Bidge will be gone freeing up salary room to sign Miller and Oswalt.
i think oswalt could be similar to pedro...IF he continues to develop. he has been better than pedro was his first couple of full years with similar K numbers. i say pedro because they are both similar in stature (sp?) and they both have that same sort of slinging type motion. oswalt just needs to stay healthy and continue on this track...but who knows how pitchers will develop from one year to the next
Oswalt is a future multiple Cy Young winner, assuming Johnson and Schilling don't pitch until they are 50.
Which means that we will be back to square one, where Miller and Oswalt are the "reason" why McLane can't afford to bolster the roster.
i'd say he is already in the best of the best. schilling, johnson, pedro, oswalt, zito, maddux. imo, he's right there with everyone else.
What happened to Carlos Hernandez, Sarloos, and Tim Redding? Were they not also great prospects? I dont follow baseball that much either. I remember a year or two back everyone was raving about Tim Redding. Then Carlos. This year I think it was Sarloos. Are these three guys suppose to be just as good as Miller and Oswalt?
Myself and others have shown you numbers from Forbes and countless facts which show that you are wrong on this issue. But you don't want to listen to facts and figures...that would screw up this nice little conceptual world you've set up for yourself.
The Astros and plenty of other teams have learned the hard way about giving up on pitchers with live arms. Two words: Curt Schilling. Two more words: former Astro. Tim Redding and Carlos Hernandez are still young and will be good pitchers for the Astros. The organization has plenty of arms. How about an infield to surround Bagwell?
Someone may already have posted this, but I heard that Oswalt has gotten to 33 wins not faster than any pitcher of the past ten years, but faster than any pitcher in the HISTORY OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL! If true, that's a pretty impressive stat...and that's an understatement.
This was a concern of mine in the last draft. I think all of their top 10 draft picks were starting pitchers, which bothered me because we have several good pitchers right now, and several more prospects on the verge of breaking into the MLB. I guess they can all be trade bait for other players, but based on Hunsicker's ability to judge talent, I would have liked to see him go after some middle infielders this last draft.
he's only scratched the surface, imo. he hit the weights last year and added 15 lbs. of muscle to increase his strength and endurance. if he adds another 10-15lbs. of muscle by next season, watch out!!!..... I'd have to disagree my man. Pitching, pitching, and more pitching!.....jmo
I'd put him in the top 3 pitchers. Pedro, Johnson, Oswalt. It's too bad Pedro and johnson took so long to come around.... Curt Schilling was horrible for a long time. He was horrible with us too. In the dome no less.
The Stros didn't draft more infielders because it was a weak draft for them and the pitchers were better values. Also, in case anyone hasn't noticed, the Astros late-season trades involved the Stros giving up a few pitchers who have been considered major-league caliber arms at some point : Nannini, Rohlicek, Franklin all were traded and Wilfredo was lost on waivers. They were re-stocking on arms ahead of time. Besides, I don't think we even signed half of those pitchers from the draft, due to the "looming strike". With school now in session, most of those players are lost. Don't know the particulars of who wasn't signed though.
It didn't turn out as bad as you think, Dusty. I'm pretty sure this list is final, as of the start of the school year. * - unsigned pick # - Draft/Follow/Evaluate candidate (there are probably a few more than I have marked, I'm not sure which HS picks elected to go the JUCO/CC route instead of D-I college) 1. If McLane lets these guys get away like he did Hampton and Johnson, I'll burn my astros cap and never follow them again. I can't follow teams that are not capable of signing top dollar players. That is a ripoff to the fans. Fortunatley the Rockets keep their best players.
