    ...for a championship team?

***Note this is EXCLUDING role players who have been on championship teams already.

But let me name those "perfect role players" (they must have never been an all-star) in the past:

    Bruce Bowen
    Kendrick Perkins
    Derek Fisher

For me, I'd have to say Thabo Sefolosha. His excellent defense will become invaluable in the playoffs.

You guys could also add in who you think is the WORST role player to have during the playoffs.

Robert Horry might be the quintessential role player of past and Dennis Rodman.

How do you define role player? Is it just someone who rarely gets plays called for him? If so, would great defensive players/rebounders like Rodman and Mutombo count? If so, I'd go with Joakim Noah. He's just a garbage man on offense, and certainly wouldn't get plays called for him if he were on the Lakers/title contender. That might change, but for now.

As of very recent years, I'd have to go with Lamar Odom.

Lakers can always count on him to, well, do it all. He can rebound, stretch the D at times, and convert around the hoop. They put him in droughts, when they need size, or in late game situations.

I have to give my vote to Thabo Sefolosha as well. Actually, the second I read the thread title I was certain that his name would be brought up by the OP.

Is Odom a really good role player, or a reluctant star who will disappear from games now and then?

This is correct. He's got all the tools, talent and "intangibles". He's good enough to be a star player so I don't know how long he's going to fit the "role player" mantra.

Actually, Odom's biggest problem is that the Lakers can't count on him to do anything.
