I have a Linksys Wireless router that has worked fine for about a year. Any time I had a problem I could just pull up my networking software(Network Magic) and it would correct the problem on its own using the repair connection function.

The last three or four weeks though I have had trouble with the internet going out on the router. It is "easily" fixed by simply unplugging the router and then plugging it back in. I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what changed in the last month or so and have come up empty.

I did upgrade the firmware but that did not seem to help. Is the router defective or is there anything else I can try. I haven't changed any settings since I hooked it up a year ago.

    Any help would be appreciated.

So it's just the router, you aren't having to reset the modem as well?

If not, then yeah it sounds like your router is just going out. Especially if nothing else has changed with your setup over the last year.

It's possible it may be a power issue, surges or something. But just offhand I'd say you probably just need a new router.

Sounds like your wireless router's just going out.

I'd take the router out of the equation if you're just using it to divide your connection. I'd plug in a computer directly to the modem if your connection goes through it.

If not, I believe Fry's have a nice 30 (31?) day return on anything, no questions ask policy? I'd just replace it and test things around. If you've already upgraded the firmware (the right firmware, obviously), then there's really not too much that could be the cause outside of your connection, whatever devices in between, or the physical router itself.

I'm having this same issue on a Linksys I bought for my mother's house. The router works fine for a while but then you're unable to connect wirelessly. The desktop that is hooked up to it never stops working. But after disconnecting the power from the router and plugging it back up everything works normal...until the next time. The router is only a few months old too.

I tend to shy away from Linksys routers as I've personally experienced what is being described here and regularly hear complaints of this from others.

My experience with Netgear routers have been much more pleasant.

upgrade the firmware on your router. Check linksys site for firmware update, download it. Log in to your router setting and update it if it isn't up to date

    Who is your internet provider?

I used to use a Linksys router as well until that happened to me also. I have Comcast and I found out that they give out free routers (with $10 S&H) or rather.. they lease it free of charge and expect it to be returned whenever you cancel your internet service. The new router has been working fine for months now. Maybe your internet provider can do the same? Just a suggestion.

Are you running a torrent program, and has that program received a recent update?

I like my Linksys router at my house. Never given me any problems at all. I just can figure out the problem experienced above.

I have had linksys routers for a long, long
time but the current ones just don't last. Finally switched to dual band Netgear a year ago, the higher band works great for the TV and the lower band for laptops, sometimes 6 laptops at a time or running at the same time. Never a glitch, I use Comcast.

Before I dumped my Linksys I was rebooting it sometimes 2 a day.

I have a Linksys as well. I've gotten into the habit of unplugging it and plugging it back in each time before I turn on my computer.

If I leave my computer alone for a while, chances are I've lost the wireless connection.

I tried that with my linksys. Thought it was Comcast fault. When I replaced it with the Netgear it has been over a year without a single loss. I even have OOMA phone going through it with crystal clear voice quality.

Be thankful all you have to do is to cycle the power on it. I have an older Linksys WRT54G and I've probably had to reset it to factory defaults at least 100 times (sometimes multiple times a week). I just never know when it is going to become "hosed". It almost has a mind of its own. Firmware is up-to-date. I can't explain it...other than it's a piece of crap.
