You haven't been out much recently or to a mall, have you?

The "fashion statement" you mentioned above is not just in Mexico and I can assure you that as close as the city is to the United States, the clothes she's wearing might be a fashion statement in El Paso.

It's a VEST, sir. That looks NOTHING like a bra. If you're joking, it's pretty tasteless of you. She's an educated person and the POLICE CHIEF of a town.

I saw part of a story about her this morning. She does not wear a gun, but she has 2 bodyguards. The reporter also stated that she is not going after the cartels. I got the implication that she considers the cartels to be the federales problem.

yeah, i think she's just going to ignore the cartels and hope they ignore her and the town...i can see her trying to find ways for the people to have healthy fun and get them to involve themselves in more constructive activities. If the town goes about their business then hopefully the cartel will do nothing more than drive through town. Probably the best route she can take, since she can't possibly fight the cartels AND improve the quality of life of the town.

Legalize, or at least decriminalize drugs (like Portugal) and the cartels in Mexico will go away.

If the alternative is to let drug dealers rule your life, then yes.

How quickly they forget: es mejor morir de pie que vivir de rodillas!

I tend to agree with you, I'm not even a "drug" guy but I think the entire concept of the War on Drugs is idiocy.

Legalize it and tax like they do with smokes and booze. Criminal element vanishes.

I'm sure a war will really stop the violence.

As long as you can make a buck moving something across the border(drugs, people, guns, etc), the cartels or some similarity will be there.

Making drugs a legal item to in the US would curtail a lot of the cartels, it's not as if we are hearing about murders or what not with criminals transporting boozes across the borders.

I'm not saying it'd put an end to cartels in general but I would make a huge difference because drug trafficing is such a lucrative criminal venture.

It might seem that a tough-fisted police chief is required for such a violent town. But Valles Garcia says she will take a reverse tactic, using a mostly female, unarmed force to patrol the streets and focus on social programs in schools and community-building. "The weapons we have are principles and values, which are the best weapons for prevention," she said. "Our work will be pure prevention. We are not going to be doing anything else other than prevention."

pretty much what i mentioned...ignore tha cartels and hope you can convince the town to ignore them as well and work on living their own lives.
