Holy moly! Homer Simpson's a Catholic, Vatican paper says
Families shouldn't be afraid to let kids watch 'the adventures of the little guys in yellow,' official paper also notes

LOS ANGELES — "The Simpsons" just got a blessing from the Vatican.

The official Vatican newspaper has declared that beer-swilling, doughnut-loving Homer Simpson and son Bart are Catholics — and what's more, it says that parents should not be afraid to let their children watch "the adventures of the little guys in yellow."

"Few people know it, and he does everything to hide it. But it's true: Homer J. Simpson is Catholic," the Osservatore Romano newspaper said in an article on Sunday headlined "Homer and Bart are Catholics."

he newspaper cited a study by a Jesuit priest of a 2005 episode of the show called "The Father, the Son and the Holy Guest Star." That study concludes that "The Simpsons" is "among the few TV programs for kids in which Christian faith, religion and questions about God are recurrent themes."

The middle class U.S. family prays before meals, and "in its own way, believes in the beyond," the newspaper quoted the Jesuit study as saying.

It's the second time the animated U.S. TV series, which is broadcast in 90 countries, has been praised by the Vatican.

In December 2009, the Osservatore Romano described the show as "tender and irreverent, scandalous and ironic, boisterous and profound, philosophical and sometimes even theological, nutty synthesis of pop culture and of the lukewarm and nihilistic American middle class."

"The Simpsons", which introduced the catch-phrase "D'oh," is the longest-running prime-time TV series in the United States and is now in its 22nd season.

    Bart: What religion are you?
Homer: You know, the one with all the well meaning rules that don't work out in real life. Uh... Christianity.

This seems very strange, given how hostile to religion the show has seemed to be in its later seasons.

I remember Lovejoy taking a jab at Catholics. I remember also where Homer met God and they implied Jesus had a breakdown (I thought that was very Family Guy of them since they never did that before).

I think the Simpsons became more hostile towards religion because soceity became more accepting. In the beginning, people were appalled Bart was talking back to his paretns, speaking out against religion would have been suicide. We live in a soceity now that is mor secular, and has shows like family guy blasting religion all the time, so it's more acceptable to do.

Bart was kicked out of Springfield Elementary for the bazillionth time, and was sent to a Catholic school. And yes both Bart and Homer converted...but I can't remember what happened at the end and can't remember if it's one of those episodes where the story doesn't exist (like Skinner not being Skinner). Plus, you can't exactly convert to Catholicism on a whim anyways, so the whole idea they could convert w/o Marge knowing or approving seems pretty silly.

The episode you're probably thinking of is when Flanders tries to baptize the Simpson children. Homer took the dive and was baptized a Flanders. But at the time they were attending a Protestant church.
