It's annoying but I've found that usually when a change like that happen, there are usually plenty of people selling connectors to convert the connections. Yeah, I was wrong about that (seemed like it was a long time ago ). I agree timing and luck plays into it. But you still should be able to get a lot of bang for your buck if you just buy a second tier card every 4 years instead of two. Different games need different things, I'm really not an expert, usually just call up friends to ask for what I need to slap together and read some recent hardocp entries to get a feel when I feel like upgrading. However, I know that Supreme Commander needed a duo core processors to play when it came out while not needing the baddest video card. On the other hand, my World of Warcraft experience in 2006 changed drastically with a single 4gb RAM upgrade. I can run to the auction house with no problem vs. having to grab a soda and watch some TV to wait for my PC to wake up.
We need more from the Steam/PC defense force: <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WdWnNgTLbKw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WdWnNgTLbKw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Wow, Valve really hit the nail on the head with Steam. I remember when HL2 was first released and everyone was extremely skeptical about it. I've been using Steam for so long that my username is my old e-mail address.
that may be true but that's also one of the reason PC gaming is still alive... users want that option to be able to be versatile as far as upgrading their systems.. you can't do that with consoles
