Is it just me or has Adelman been complaining about things more than usual? From the arbitrary nature of the Yao Ming time limit, to turtlenecks (the banning of which turned out not to be true), to the disclosure of the 24 min limit, to people expecting too much out of Yao initially, to preseason schedule, to Rockets visits to the Great Wall, etc. Not that I mind coaches who complain about things or that Adelman doesn't have a legitimate point on these things, but it just seems to kind of deviate from Adelman's usual behavior over the last few years. Is it just me or has anyone else notice it? My theory is that Adelman probably doesn't plan on coaching beyond this year (maybe for 2 years tops), so having no need to please anyone for the next contract, he's more inclined to be outspoken.
I doubt it, I'd say it's more likely the opposite, that he's mad he doesn't have a contract beyond this year, and he should be.
I've noticed it too. Complains about the trip to China, complains about lack of effort, and complains about the rule regarding mock turtlenecks. Complain complain complain. Actually, I was even thinking he looked kind of grumpy in the picture where he was getting off of the plane in China. Wonder what he was thinking? "Damn plane. Seats are so small. Can't believe Les charged me an extra $50 bucks in baggage fees to pack extra ties since I had to leave my turtlenecks at home. Should have flown Southwest. They don't charge fees but they have all those crying babies on board and you don't get a reserved seat." Complain complain complain. He's a gentleman of a certain age so I think the complaining can be expected and forgiven.
I don't care if he has opinions about things, the only thing that matters is he is a damn good coach.
That's just the man's style. Even when good things happen, he still seems kind of grumpy and unimpressed.
I don't think he was as grumpy in the past few years. Maybe I remember wrong. But now he reminds me of Jeff Van Gundy.
Hmmm... this cries out for a photoshop job combining the heads of Adelman and Van Gundy, with a stache, a goatee, and a monocle! Alas, I have no skills in that regard.
I was just thinking this the other day. I know that he can have a somewhat grumpy disposition, but I was surprised to hear his seemingly utter disdain for the preseason schedule centered around the trip to China. He wasn't shy about. I expected him to give us relative coach-speak like "It's obviously a challenge because it's different than in previous camps, but we'll make the best of it."
Yeah, it's always funny how he always complains about the preseason schedule. I remember last year he was complaining about the preseason schedule in an article and the last sentence of the article read "NBA teams arrange their own preseason schedules" or something like that.
You wonder to whom he is really airing his gripes to? DM? Les? David Stern? Must be (old) gentlemen's agreement that Stern doesn't say anything about Adelman's complaints. He's crankier this year. Last year he just really started complaining with our schedule around Christmas Day, that we're on the rad, and guys have no time to celebrate Christmas. This year I notice we're free on the days around Christmas, so somebody listened. Even the Chinese media picked up on Adelman's complaints and it seemed they were concerned that it would negatively impact the Rockets' form. Leave it to Scola and Battier to be more positive in their comments. Scola: I know everybody's complaining but for me it is a great opportunity to meet with fans from a different part of the world . . . Battier: "It's what it is and we'll deal with it the best we can." (Both paraphrases)
