Blaine Omoruyi was watching tapes with the football team around 5 p.m. when he stood up and passed out, officials said. An ambulance was called to the school, which is located at 9650 Alcott, in the Spring Branch Independent School District. Omoruyi was transported to Memorial City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Students said he was a popular senior at the school. "He was really a good friend to me. I've (known) him for a long time," said Joshua Whitney, a student. The cause of death is not yet known. The student did not have any known health problems. School officials said that Omoruyi was an athlete at the school, but he was not playing sports this year due to a broken ankle over the summer. "He was in a cast so he was not participating in anything," said Chief Chuck Brawner, with the Spring Branch ISD Police Department. An investigation is under way. </i> This is so sad. RIP Blaine. +
Vengeance, I heard a student from your alma-mater, Strake Jesuit, died during a basketball game tonight. I'm sorry to hear it; I have friends there.
Sending out prayers for their families. So sad to read about this every year it seems, to such young souls.
Yeah, I just heard that as well -- that's what prompted me to look for that story and all I found was the story about Northbrook. The student from Strake Jesuit was Kenneth McGregor. More info as I hear it.
OH MY GOODNESS! My heart goes out to his family, I know this time has to be difficult for them. My prayers go out to the Omoruyi family.
Well, ufortunately I can't seem to find any information on the player from Strake, other than that I knew him. He had Spanish class in "my" classroom the period after AP Computer science class last year. He'd usually be one of the first few people in the classroom and we'd chill and talk for a few minutes. He was probably one of the most friendly, outgoing, down-to-earth coolest people I've ever met. We played Dreamcast once -- NBA 2K2. Kenneth was an unbelievably cool guy, and my prayers most certainly go out to his family and friends. I am dreading going in to school/work tomorrow to the sorrow of the morning.
Just got an email from someone at the school. Kenneth McGregor collapsed on the court at Bellaire High School. We will have a prayer service during first period tomorrow. Not really anything new. I really hope we have more than a simple, one-period prayer service though. Although I'm sure that a few days later we'll have a mass, and most of the school will be at his funeral. Kenneth's death has left me deeply saddened. I really can't say enough about him as a person -- it's always so sad to see someone go, but for someone who was such an awesome human being, it's doubly sad and tragic.
Two Houston high school athletes died on the same day? This is horrible news. Thoughts and prayers to the families. How does this happen?
Schools Mourn Deaths Of 2 Students M. E. To Conduct Autopsies Posted: 7:52 a.m. CDT September 19, 2002 Updated: 8:08 a.m. CDT September 19, 2002 HOUSTON -- A high school basketball player and a football player collapsed and died Wednesday at two separate campuses. Kenneth McGregor, 16, a student at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in southwest Houston died after collapsing at about 8 p.m. during a basketball game at Bellaire High School, authorities said. Paramedics rushed McGregor to St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, where he later died. Father Daniel Lahart, the school's president, said that counselors will be on hand Thursday to attend to the students and that a prayer service will be held in the auditorium. "(McGregor) was a very popular young man," Lahart said. "Teachers I was speaking with last night said his presence in a class was dynamic (and his) empty chair today will be a great loss." Earlier Wednesday, another student collapsed and died in the locker room at Northbrook High School in northwest Houston, authorities said. Blaine Omoruyi, 17, was watching tapes with the football team around 5 p.m. when he stood up and passed out, officials said. Paramedics rushed Omoruyi to Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital, where he later died. School officials said that Omoruyi was an athlete at the school, but he was not playing sports this year due to a broken ankle over the summer. Students said Omoruyi was a popular senior at the school. The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death for the two students.
This is terrible in every situation. My heart and prayers go out to everyone involved in Austin, as well as at Northbrook and here at Strake Jesuit. We had our prayer service for Kenneth this morning. It's still uncertain as to what else will be occurring, but we will certainly have some mass or ceremony next week. It's been so terribly sad to see the students walking around today -- walking across campus and then just bursting out in tears. I covered the basketball coach's classes today and may do so again tomorrow. I just can't imagine how hard it must be, not only for the students, but also for his teachers. There is a certain bond formed between teacher and student that is much like a very deep friendship, especially when the student was such a good person. To have taught Kenneth, then have his seat empty today is just too sad to bear.
