This is true. And while you can't fault McDonald's for people being stupid, they certainly do benefit from the ignorance our culture seems to have when it comes to proper diet. People seem to think that a hamburger, fries, and a coke constitutes a meal... it's the "all-american meal". But it's basically corn starch, salt, and HFCS all remodeled to look like food that it isn't. If people were more aware and educated about proper diet/nutrition, McDonald's would go out of business. Now, I'm not suggesting guilt by association... but you have to wonder... follow the money... I doubt McDonald's is interested in educating people about its food, or about healthy eating.
It's too bad fast food is dominated by hamburger and mexican food places. I still think there is a homerun to be hit by having sub sandwich shops with drive-thrus. I know there are some places that you can do drive-thru subs but most places you have to go in and, unfortunately, that is just a deal-breaker for people on the run (or fat/lazy people who don't want to exit the car and go into a sub shop if it better suits you). I just find the inconvience of not being able to drive thru for a sub sandwich is a problem in this fast food world as far as contributing to what people eat. If sandwich shops with drive thrus were more in abundance around towns, then I have no doubt that people would choose those options in more abundance over places like McDonalds. But, there is a damn McDonalds, Sonic, Wendys, etc. . on every corner practically. Yes, they serve salads and grilled chicken sandwiches but that's not the same as a good old sandwich with chips. Obviously, a sandwich can be unhealthy but even a stacked sandwich isn't as bad as the hamburger/fries combos we are inundated with at these burger places (or chicken strips/nuggets or whatever). I can only surmise that the sub building drive thru process is still lacking so much so that it isn't a viable option for drive thrus in abundance. But, I don't think that is necessarily the case as some sub places do have drive-thrus but are usually out of the way because there are so few of them. I'm definitely guilty of falling victim to the drive-thru when I don't keep my house stocked with food properly. I just wish I could drive-thru for a sandwich and chips instead in my haste to have a meal with no hassle. If the fast food drive thru industry was dominated by sandwich shops instead of hamburger/mexican places, then the health of the nation would be a lot better off imo.
In Europe, you can find sandwhiches made with FRESH ingredients all over. Often choices are ready-made so you can just grab and go. I love a good burger but I feel great about having an option for something fast that also tastes good. In America, we essentially don't have any healthy options for something fast, tasty AND convenient.
I'm pretty sure if you use as much salt as McDonalds does on ANY food, it would look the same and not decompose in the air. Salt has been used to preserve food for thousands of years, so its really no surprise that the fries don't decompose. I'm a little more worried about the burger. They probably use so much salt in the burger because it would taste like crap otherwise.
http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds...y#met=sp_dyn_le00_in&idim=country:USA:JPN:HKG Pretty cool life expectancy chart where you can turn different countries on and off. Go figure Hong Kong and Japan are at the top. Still not too bad here in the US even though we put all that crap in our bodies.
Can't agree more. If you didn't already know that eating fast food was bad for you before that stupid movie, then I have some land to sell you on the moon. If you eat it everyday, you're going to die. If you don't eat it every day, you're still going to die...but maybe not as quickly. I just polished off a sausage & egg biscuit and the finest creation known to man...a McDonalds hashbrown.
Didn't read the entire thread, but... I love fast food... and will continue to eat it because... well, gosh darn it, because it's FAST and it's FOOD, no matter if it makes me fat, doesn't decompose, makes money hungry CEOs richer, or whatever!
Why? Does every person who eats fast food go to the ER? My pipes were dirty BEFORE I came to "The States" to eat fast food, sir.
What the heck is Jack In The Box meat made out of? They should be checking them out ...like seriously their burgers are horrible.
Well, it's usually chest pain...followed by tingling in certain areas of the body...and you end up in the ER. Then, they run a dye through your system and tell you such-and-such artery is 95% clogged. Then, they do the roter rooter thingy-ma-jig and insert the stent. Then, you end up like Dick Cheney.
The only sandwich place that can compete with the price and speed of fast food is Subway. While there are drive-thru Subways out there, I think they tend to stay away from developing them as it pretty much kills their concept. You could have smaller mom and pop places try to do it, but in reality, they'd have to have killer sales to afford a standalone building where other fast food kings are dominating.
That's a myth. You can be skinny or whatever and still have your pipes clogged. You can't just eat what you want just because you exercise. You are better off than the fatty who eats crap and doesn't exercise, though, obviously. It's probably more important to make sure your trygliceride, cholesterol and blood pressure levels are all normal. I would say you are okay if those are okay...but like was said earlier...this crap doesn't happen to most people until their old age after eating crap for years and years that it takes for plaque build-up...assuming you don't die of cancer first.
The post-Super Size me era makes me want to eat at McDonalds as much as possible. You dont have to like McDonalds but for the love of god.. quit parading around like you are above eating a greasy cheeseburger. Quit being a freaking hipster.
People that eat more McDonald's as a reaction to "tree huggers" and "hipsters" are proof that natural selection is real.
