Look dude, engineering anywhere is tough. No knock on that. I'm dual majoring in math and finance. So it's not exactly a stroll through the park either. Yet I still stand by my stance that UH isn't all that great. You're right about the last bit though!
I'm sorry for your loss. I have never been in such situation, but I can imagine how hard it can be. However, you have to see it from the professor's light. You called in the day it was due, but did you try to meet with him in person later in the week, or possibly the same day? I know death is not something you should lie about, but I'm pretty it happens more often than is warrant. Anyways, your professor has no idea you were telling the truth.
If you've genuinely got some good leads on other, more competitive universities, best of luck. Just remember that if it's another big public school, a lot of the curricula is fairly standardized nationwide, and that the caliber of students tends to overlap from one place to the next.
On another note, I completely disagree with you that UH is a substandard university. There's over 30,000 students, so not everyone is what you want. I'm not sure what's your major, but are you in the honor's college? They have extremely bright students there, and maybe it's something you should look into if you want to be around a different breed of students. Also, a B won't bring your GPA down that much, since you're only a freshman/sophmore. I got 5hrs worth of B's, but my GPA is still a 3.9. Are you sure you will get a B in the class? If you're hitting 95+ on your exam and quizes, you can still get an A in the class if you get a 100 on the next essay.
I'm not arguing that either. You are absolutely correct. There are loads of bright students at UH. I've run across many. The fact is though that they are the exception and not the majority. Generally speaking the regular student body isn't all that great. If it was, UH would receive more academic recognition. It's whatever though, it's not even a first tier university, so it would be dumb to hold it to those standards.
In the end, my GPA wont suffer substantially. I guess i'm being a bit snobbish about the whole B thing. Oh well, i'll get over it. a 3.9 ish still sounds solid
Yeah, i'm fairly sure it puts an A out of reach even with a 100 on the next two papers. I'll try anyways, who knows. Maybe it will work.
Anyways man, thanks for your reply. For some reason your post worked well to soothe my anger lol
Maybe I'm missing something here, but if it's such a bad university, and you get top grades, why didn't you go to a "better" university?
i agree with the other poster...come join us in engineering or go to the honors college...it's slightly tougher lol
I had a classmate who was suffering from cancer and had to get chemo frequently. He made and A in the class. He could have easily used his excuses to skip classes or exams, but he showed up to every class meeting and turned in every assignment.
Are you serious it is like high school level for you? This is the mistake high school graduates usually make. They think the lower level classes are easy and not take them seriously and struggle when they get to the upper level classes. I have tutored freshman and sophomores who weren't even sure what absolute numbers were and yet they claimed college is easy because they can do simple algebra.
Agree the thread should end there, but have to say, right after seeing this thread yesterday a.m., I had a student come by and say his homework was late because he'd just found out his brother in Indonesia had fallen into a coma. It was only 40 minutes late, so I accepted it, but I asked to hear back about his brother. See, it could be total crap. Or it could be real. It could even be an ESL issue and he could have meant his brother went to a highschool prom. How do you ask for proof of a coma, and how much of a jerk of a prof are you when you ask for proof of a coma? Oy.
Chopped, I can come up with random rankings from every school, that doesn't mean a thing. I don't know why some of you are getting so flustered with hamza's statement that the general education level of UH is substandard. Look at it's national rank for undergrad...I know the rank isn't everything, but I also know that most of my science class A's came from UH when I would come home and take classes during the summer. So in that regard, thank you UH!! I'm not saying I didn't learn anything, because I did...but those classes are not nearly as challenging as what I was used to.
In "real life", there are always exceptions (and extensions) available for just about everything. The sooner you realize this the better. Go through the proper channels and up the hierarchy with proof and plead your case truthfully. Only losers tuck their tail between their legs and say "I guess dems the rules!" after the first "no" they receive.
I have heard so much negativity about UH it's ridiculous. Is this school really that big of a joke? From their curriculum to staff.
Just a thought...you shouldn't judge a University (ANY University) on the quality of students/classes in the freshmen and sophmore core classes. It almost amazing when you get to Junior level more advanced classes specific to your major. You kind of wonder where everybody went.
