I will go on a vacation next month for a week. My budget is pretty much limited to about $2000 total. I`ve looked up a few sites and have come up with a few destinations. I really need some advice here. Thanks in advance.

    1. What`s the cheapest way to travel? Using a travel agency? have them plan out the trip, flight, accomodations, etc.?

    2. Where would you go? My wife`s choice is Hawaii. But it seems so cliche.

$2,000 for just you and your wife or are there more people? If just you ant your wife, I suggest a cruise.

No I will give you a seriously good vacation that you can have a good time and even lower your budget a bit.

Puerto Morelos, Mexico. Its a little town about 30 minutes from the Cancun airport. It is not at all a resort town. Most of the tourists seemed to be older Euros (I went in February) But you could always find your own stretch of beach and be undisturbed. There is all sorts of fishing and scuba diving. As well, the town really is loaded with some good food. The ruins are close as well and if you want to do the resort/party thing then you can go to Cancun or Playa Del Carmen. Its a place where you can really relax. I went to San Juan PR in August and would not so much recommend it. But check out Puerto Morelos.

Also, don't know much about this place, but in February we are going to Placencia(sp?) Belize. Supposed to be a great locale.

I agree that a cruise is the most bang for your buck, BUT, you need to study your options. Don't go sailing in the Caribbean during hurricane season. Yes they dodge the storms, but you will be tossed around like a tennis ball.

Cruise would be my choice if I were you. $2,000 will get you two a good room on the boat. There is a ton to do, lot of food is included. I've only been on one cruise, but it was great.

is it cheaper to go through a travel agency and have them put the trip together, or is it cheaper to get your own room via expedia and whatnot as well as your flight?

My experience has been no. I've always found the best deals using websites, searching for say travelocity coupon code, or even using airline websites depending on where you want to go. For instance, I went to Phoenix and knew US Airways is based there and they by far had the best rates. I built a vacation package that included a really nice Golf/Spa Resort and Rental car for a weekend getaway for 2 for under $600 total. If you wanted to go to Chicago, use United and if you don't mind Hobby, Southwest Vacations has some good deals too. If you are traveling outside the US and would like to go to a beach, I'd suggest St Lucia. Hope that helps.

2,000 including air fare. Yikes. You mind as well and stay home. Depending on when you book your flight, airfare for you and your wife will get half your budget right there.

I've been. Good place. Not a party town or anything. Very laid back with a town square that has a bar or two. Gotta be careful of your surroundings. Was only there for a couple of nights before we headed off to an island to stay with a family for a few nights.
