With this being a "big" summer for star-caliber FA's, I think a lot of role players are being forgotten. The role player is often a key to getting the star packed team over the top. Who do you think the best role player was this past year?

Certainly during the Rockets two championship runs, MArio Elie had to be one of the best, if not the best in the league. This year, it is a little trickier to tell.
The Lakers dont really have a super role player. Austin Croshere maybe was one of the best. The blazers just really have a lot of good players, but no excellent role player.

In the end, even though they got beat in the first round, I think the best role player of the past year, if not the past 2 years has got to be Jon Barry. I mean, you look at that guy and you say how can he have any talent. But he comes in, always gets the crowd electrified, usually makes one or two big plays, never makes too many mistakes (occasionally too excited) and does the job off the bench. He gets my vote.

Pippen is the best, Shandon will hopefully be taking the title in a couple of years.

    Jon Barry? Best scrub maybe.

my vote goes to shaq...his role was to score, rebound and intimidate on defense...he did those things pretty well

Pippen's a great roleplayer- he portrayed the classic Judas archetype perfectly.

Ruben Patterson - no plays are run for him, but he always hustles and gets the offensive rebound. Darvin Ham was a pretty good energy player as well.

Berry is a very good role player, but I would have to go with Croshere over him, but my best role player would have to be either Theo Ratliff, Bo Orlando, or Jerome Williams.

The ideal role player is a forward in most cases, it doesn't matter which one. This is what you want from your role player depending on their position:

    SF: 14 pts, 6 assts, 4-5 reb, 2 stls
    PF: 12 pts, 3 assts, 12 reb, 1 blk

So who is it, Scottie Pippen or Dale Davis?
Davis this year, but Pippen holds the all-time record.

If you ask me, though, Shandon appears to be headed toward those SF numbers, and he'll be playing the 3 if Cat comes back.
