http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/articles/20020916/427583.html Here is an interesting article off the Sporting News website that debates what exactly is "required" to market someone as a superstar. It says that one of those is to play in a large market, which I strongly disagree since most players have no control over where they're playing due to being drafted. Here are what I think makes a superstar: 1) Talent. Has to have strong skills and is average or above in every aspect of the game; has very little flaws or deficiencies. 2) Makes everyone around him better. Looks to make teammates better and to involve others in the offense. 3) Leadership. Has to be the leader on the team- encourage them when they're down and advise them and be a coach on the floor. 4) Attitude. Has to have a winning attitude and be willing to go to work each day. Be willing to shoulder the blame instead of letting it go onto other teammates. 5) Desire to win. Primary reason for playing the game is to win, win, win. Not for individual accolades or stats. Is interested in winning a ring, opposed to just a spot on the All-Star team. There are other little nuances that go with being a superstar, but I feel that these are the basic attributes.
man steve francis has all of those aspects exept the one saying that he needs to get everyone involved. He'll get there though.
Rules For The NBA Marketing Machine... 1) Talent- Among the top 10 in his position 2) Athleticism- The flashy pass or the monster dunk is what sells tickets 3) Charisma- The game face is for the game. The pretty smile is for the commercials. 4) A winning team- The team has to make the playoffs at least once or be in contention. All the rest like fundamentals, teamwork, leadership or defense is crap to David Stern...
do you really think a pretty smile matters. Hakeem was a super star, but your right he wasn't a high market player. Man that was a good point all the guys selling shoes, are not that bad looking.
