they say i look like kaman, play defense like dirk and shoot like chuck hayes.

    Cool thread idea.

    In my prime strengths:

Really good athlete, good handles, above average jumping ability, great scorer. I was almost always the best offensive player on the court back then

    Weaknesses:

Ball hog, didn't play much defense except looking for steals, lazy rebounder, always cared about making something look flashy instead of just making the simple play, really bad temper with little tolerance for teammates. I would yell at people, refuse to include them on the offensive end and straight up tell them if they sucked.

    Now:

    Strengths

Good scorer, good athlete, very good rebounder with pretty good ball handling skills. Can play 2/3 or even work the post (I'm 6'3). Solid passer as well.

    Weaknesses:

Still tend to shoot too much and my jumper is streaky now. Not much of an on ball defender and can get lazy on D fairly quickly. Still have a bad temper and get pissed at teammates when they consistantly **** up.

I'm not someone who is good for friendly pickup games to be honest. I'm too competitive and I know it so it is what it is.

I'm surprised so many people list dribbling as a problem. I can dribble decently as that is something I worked on quite a bit but am very inconsistent on my shot. I used to have some decent quickness and could get to the hoop consistently, if not always actually put the ball in the hoop. These days though injuries and age have taken away a lot of my quickness.

    I missed this post.

In my prime for my size (5'-7") I would say slightly above average. I was a decent dribbler, good passer, good sense of fundamentals, had a quick first step and quick hands on defense. What held me back was that I was a very very streaky shooting and could go through cold slumps for weeks. A lot of times I could have a great drive and then clank on a wide open lay up. Other times I could hit shots not even looking at the basket.

    Where's the "I'm Kobe b*tch!" option?

I play good on my drive way because of my flimsy backboard. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty darn good.

Put me on a gym or playground rim that's as hard as a frikking rock, I am reduced to a jump shooter :(

-edit - a jump shooter that misses all the time.

I'm surprised you're surprised.. Dribbling is a tremendous feat to conquer. I was simply blessed with the ability b/c I started 'ballinnnnn' at such a young age--infantile baby. But, for others, what we can do with a BALL may not look so easy.

What helped me with my dribbling was the air I had in my ball. I didn't know any better so my ball always didn't have enough air. Most of my dribbling was more about bouncing it than moving with it.

    if that makes any sense...

I think my dribbling ability is definately above average. I have never been athletically gifted. At my peak, the closest I got to dunking was grabbing rim (I'm 5'9"). I played basketball on a regular basis since I was like 9, till about 2 years ago when I blew my knee out (I'm 24). Now. its just painful to play.

I'm surprised too. I was never a good shooter, but I was always able to dribble well. In fact, that was the only thing i could really do fairly well.

I scored 30 pts in a game in 8th grade on my schools B-Team. I voted professional.

My game is kinda like Ray Allen. I'm not going to blow by anyone or do something athletically spectacular. But I'll be active without the ball, get open and knock down trays. Also I won a FT contest for the Houston Area when I was maybe 15.

Holy crap  Man I didn't follow Ray Allen that close when he was with the Bucks but man... Lots of nasty facials.

It doesn't seem like the majority of people here played organized ball. People here seem to be just having some fun and playing casual pickup games so you normally don't see that player spend a lot of time working on ball handling

Im a Chuck Hayes/ Ben Wallace-type. Occasionally, when I'm on, I can make threes though.

Average. 5'8" 160 shooting guard, started a few games varsity when the guy ahead of me couldn't keep a 2.0. Balls out player that guarded the other team's best perimeter guy and could knock down open jumpshots. Good ball handler and slasher in pick up games, but wildly inconsistent when I was in organized basketball. Quick in bursts, but horrible vertical leap.

    NBAdraft.net comparison: Joe Dumars
Real life comparison: short Mark Madsen

i'm average. i'm a pretty good shooter, but i'm too short to get my own shot v. taller defenders. i can penetrate if it's a 3-on-3ish type of game or if the big men aren't over 6 foot. but in general, i'm more of a spot up type of shooter.

but i consider myself a GREAT perimeter defender though. i've been known to shut down the top scorers when i play IM games.

Dribbling, to me at least seems like a skill you can learn. Having an instinct around the hoop though seems more like an innate talent. This is just my own opinion but it seems like with decent practice you can become a good dribbler but even with a lot of practice you might not become someone who can finish at the hoop.
